Scots Outwit Engineers

NORTHBORO, Mass. — Gordon traveled to play WPI in its first game back in Massachusetts after spring break at the New England Baseball Complex and recorded 12 hits in its 10-7 win.

The Engineers (7-7) scored one run in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single by Steven Gallagher. He drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to make it a 2-0 game. The Fighting Scots (5-7) blew open the game in the top of the fourth as they scored eight runs to take an 8-2 lead. They had eight hits in the inning with six singles and two doubles. Travis Benoit drove in Daniel Quint on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead to seven runs. WPI cut the deficit to two runs with five runs in the bottom of the seventh with one run coming off a sacrifice fly by Evan Lacroix, a two-RBI single by Matt Howard, and a two-RBI double by David Larson. The last four runs came with two outs in the inning. Benoit hit an RBI double in the top of the ninth that drove in Christian Hodge to make it a 10-7 game going into the last half inning. The Engineers were able to put a runner on base with one out, but they hit into a groundout and Garrett Poole struck out the next batter to seal the victory for the Fighting Scots.  

Benoit tied his career-high with four hits and also had three RBIs, one run, and a double. Quint went 2-for-5 with two runs, one RBI, and a double. Hodge batted 2-for-4 with two runs, one RBI, and a stolen base.

Derek Hudson started the game, pitched four innings, and struck out three batters. Joe Pedulla picked up the win as he pitched three innings of relief and also had three strikeouts. Poole earned his first career save as he pitched two innings with zero hits and two strikeouts.
