SALEM, Mass. — Gordon traveled to play Salem State in non-conference action at Alumni Field and put 23 shots on goal in its 16-8 win.
The Vikings (0-5) scored first with two goals in the first two and a half minutes of action for a 2-0 lead. The Fighting Scots (4-5) responded by scoring four straight goals to take a 4-2 lead. Courtney Smith scored in the 12
th minute to make it a 4-3 game.
Olivia McCarrick and
Greta Moore both scored in the next seven minutes to stretch the lead out to three goals. Salem State made it a 6-5 game with six minutes left in the half with goals by Courtney Smith and Chelsea Smith. McCarrick scored an unassisted goal with six seconds left to give Gordon a 7-5 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, the Fighting Scots broke the game open by scoring six straight goals in a span of 12 minutes to take a 13-5 lead with 13:38 left. McCarrick and
Lena Larson both scored two goals while
Paige Thompson and
Katelyn Dyer each scored one. Smith scored off a pass from Bridget Lawless in the 50
th minute to cut the deficit to seven goals, but that would be the closest the Vikings would get as Gordon outscored them 3-1 the rest of the way to seal the victory.
McCarrick handed out a career-high five assists while also scoring four goals, winning five draw controls, causing four turnovers, and grabbing two ground balls. Moore and Larson both scored a career-high four goals while Moore also grabbed a career-best nine ground balls. Dyer scored three goals and led the team with six draw controls.
Kaitlyn Ober recorded seven saves and faced 21 shots.
The Fighting Scots next travel to play New England College in their last non-conference game of the season March 29 at 4 p.m.
