DANVERS, Mass. — Gordon hosted Wentworth in its Commonwealth Coast Conference home opener at St. John's Prep and lost the first game 3-2 in 13 innings and won the second game 6-1.
In game one, the Fighting Scots (7-8, 1-1 CCC) and the Leopards (5-6, 1-1 CCC) combined to strand 14 runners on base in the first nine innings and 22 total. Wentworth scored three runs in the top of the 13
th inning with one run coming off an error by the pitcher, one run on an RBI double by Tyler Weninger, and the third run off a sacrifice bunt by Tim Elrick. In the bottom of the 13
th Daniel Quint singled to right field,
Erik Gauer was walked, and
Christian Hodge hit a single to centerfield to load the bases with no outs. Then
Travis Benoit and
Joseph Mack hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it a 3-2 game. The Leopards held on defense after that as they forced a pop out, struck out the next batter, and forced a fly out to seal the win.
Hodge tied his career-best with four hits on a career-high six at-bats. Benoit batted 2-for-6 with one RBI.
John Lagerfeldt also went 2-for-6.
Derek Hudson pitched a career-high ten innings, allowed five hits, and recorded eight strikeouts.
In game two, Gordon got on the board first in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly by Gauer that drove in
Alec Willey. Ross Golebiewski tied the game in the top of the second with an RBI single to centerfield. Lagerfeldt drove in Hodge in the bottom of the fourth with a single up the left side. Willey hit an RBI single to score
Addison Tarr and Benoit hit a two-RBI single to drive in Quint and Willey the bottom of the fifth and make it a 5-1 game. In the top of the sixth, Hodge scored off an error by the second baseman to stretch the lead to five runs. The Fighting Scots only allowed two hits and forced Wentworth to leave three runners on base in the last four innings before the game was called due to darkness.
Willey batted 2-for-3 with two runs, one RBI, and a double. Mack also went 2-for-3 and had a stolen base. Benoit batted 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Joe Pedulla picked up his fourth win as he pitched six innings and had two strikeouts.
Gordon next hosts Emerson in non-conference action April 5 at 3:30 p.m.
