Scots Fall Twice to Blue Devils in First Games Of RussMatt Invitational

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Gordon played SUNY Fredonia in a doubleheader in their first games at the RussMatt Florida Invitational and lost the first game 5-2 and the second game 6-3 at Lake Myrtle Park.

In the first game, the Fighting Scots (0-3) scored first in the bottom of the third inning as Matt Moffatt singled to drive in Addison Tarr. The Blue Devils (5-1) scored three runs in the top of the fourth off a sacrifice fly, a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, and a single to make it 3-1. Joseph Mack cut the lead to one run with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth that drove in Alec Willey. SUNY Fredonia added two more runs in the top of the seventh with a two-RBI single. In the bottom of the seventh, Daniel Quint walked to lead off the inning and he advanced to second base off a single by Tarr. Moffat then flew out to right field and Steve Zaprowski threw out Quint at third base for a double play. Christian Hodge struck out to seal the win for the Blue Devils.

Tarr batted 2-for-3 with one run. Moffatt went 1-for-4 with one RBI and Mack batted 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Derek Hudson started the game and pitched 6.2 innings, allowed five runs with three of them being earned off of seven hits. He also recorded three strikeouts.

In the second game, the Fighting Scots scored three runs in the top of the third with Willey and Erik Gauer both hitting RBI singles to right field and Hodge hitting an RBI double to centerfield to make it 3-0. SUNY Fredonia tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double by Daniel Goodbread and a two-RBI double by Joshua Crocetti. They added two runs in the bottom of the fifth with a two-RBI double by J.T. Angora and one run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Steve Zaprow. In the top of the seventh, Hodge was walked and then stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Travis Benoit and Mack both struck out swinging to close out the game.

Tarr went 2-for-3 with one run. Willey batted 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Gauer went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Garrett Poole started the game and pitched 4.2 innings, allowed five runs off of seven hits, and struck out five batters. Timothy Oh pitched 1.1 innings of relief and recorded two strikeouts.

Gordon next plays a doubleheader against Becker tomorrow March 10 at 3:30 p.m. at Pat Thomas Stadium.
