MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — Gordon traveled to play Salve Regina in Commonwealth Coast Conference play at Gaudet Field and put 21 shots on goal in its 18-12 loss.
The Fighting Scots (7-8, 4-2 CCC) started the game with two straight goals by
Cassidy Allen and
Olivia McCarrick to put them up 2-0 four minutes into the game. The Seahawks (5-7, 4-2 CCC) responded by scoring five straight goals to take a 5-2 lead.
Katelyn Dyer scored once and McCarrick scored twice in the next three minutes to tie the game at 5-5. Salve Regina then scored two straight goals to put them up two goals. They outscored the Fighting Scots 3-2 in the last ten minutes of half to take a 10-7 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, both teams scored two goals in the first nine minutes to make it a 12-9 game. The Seahawks then scored two straight goals in a four-minute span to stretch the lead to five goals. Dyer scored off a pass from McCarrick in the 45
th minute to cut the lead to four goals. Maddie Villareal scored in the 47
th minute to make it a 15-10 game.
Paige Thompson scored 24 seconds later to cut the deficit down to four goals with 12:23 left. Salve Regina sealed the win by outscoring Gordon 3-1 in the last 6:40 of action.
Dyer led the team with four goals, grabbed a career-high nine ground balls, and tied her career-high with six caused turnovers. McCarrick led the team with three assists, scored two goals and grabbed five ground balls.
Greta Moore caused a career-best three turnovers while also handing out two assists and scoring one goal.
McCarrick is now sixth in school history in career points with 226 and tied for sixth in career assists with 70. Dyer is now third in school history for season draw controls with 88.
The Fighting Scots next host Roger Williams in CCC action April 21 at 12 p.m.
