Scots Declaw Lions

WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon hosted Eastern Nazarene in Commonwealth Coast Conference play at J. Tec White Field and combined for 18 hits in its 5-3 and 5-2 wins to sweep the series.

In game one, the Lions (16-16, 1-11 CCC) got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second inning with both runs being scored off an error by the third baseman. They stretched the lead to three runs with an RBI single by Steven Pesce in the top of the third. The Fighting Scots (16-12, 8-4 CCC) scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Alec Willey scored off an error by the third baseman, Joseph Mack and Addison Tarr were both hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score John Lagerfeldt and Chris Leavitt, and Christian Hodge singled to left field to drive in Matt Moffatt. In the bottom of the sixth, Willey stole home to stretch the lead to two runs. Eastern Nazarene started the top of the seventh with a single, but then hit into a double play the next at-bat to put two outs on the board. Gordon forced a pop out the next at-bat to seal the win.

Lagerfeldt went 2-for-2 with one run, a walk, and a stolen base. Leavitt batted 2-for-3 with one run. Tarr went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Garrett Poole pitched a complete game and struck out two batters.

In game two, the Lions struck first in the top of the first as Zach Zaino hit an RBI double to left field to score Connor Simpson. Leavitt tied the game in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to left field to drive in Willey. Matthew Urena grounded out to score Joshua Bombard in the top of the fourth to give Eastern Nazarene a 2-1 lead. The Fighting Scots responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Leavitt doubled to center field to score Willey and Moffat singled to right field to drive in Leavitt to make it a 3-2 game. In the bottom of the fifth, Hodge doubled to score Daniel Quint and Tarr to stretch the lead to three runs. Gordon held the Lions without a hit in the top of the sixth to give them one more opportunity to tie the game. In the top of the seventh, Eastern Nazarene put its two first batters on base with a walk and a single. The Fighting Scots then forced a fly out and a ground out double play to clinch the victory.

Willey batted 2-for-2 with two runs, a double, and a walk. Leavitt went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run. Hodge batted 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Mark Gadaleta picked up his first career win as he pitched six innings, allowed two runs on six hits, and recorded two strikeouts. Timothy Oh recorded his first career save as he pitched one inning and forced a fly out and a ground out.

Gordon next hosts Pine Manor in non-conference play April 24 at 3:30 pm.
