Scots Split First Two Matches of Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. — Gordon split its first two matches at the Brandeis Invitational held at the Red Auerbach Arena with a 3-0 loss to Bowdoin and a 3-0 win over Maine-Presque Isle.

In the first match, the Polar Bears (2-0) won the first set 25-19 as they recorded 11 kills in the set. They built up a 13-point lead as they started the set by outscoring the Fighting Scots (5-3) 18-5. Gordon cut the deficit to five points with a 14-6 run before Bowdoin won the set on a kill by Sophia Pahl.

The Polar Bears won the second set 25-12. They started the set with a 7-0 run and ended up leading by 18-5 for the second set in a row. Gordon was able to cut the lead to 12 points, but could get no closer as Bowdoin won the set off a service error.

In the third set, the Fighting Scots recorded a match-high 12 kills, but it was not enough as the Polar Bears had 16 kills and won the set 25-23. Bowdoin started the set with an 11-5 run. Gordon scored four out of the next seven points to make it a 15-10 game. The Polar Bears took a 23-17 lead before the Fighting Scots scored five straight points on two errors and three kills by Amanda Snyder. Bowdoin closed out the set and the match by scoring two straight points on kills by Gabby Koenig and Khelsea Gordon.

Snyder led Gordon with 14 kills and also had five digs. Mackenzie Hinds recorded seven kills and also had one dig. Ashlyn Gergins dished out a team-high 20 assists.

In the second match, Gordon won the first set 27-25 against the Owls (2-2) as they recorded 11 kills. Maine-Presque Isle started the match on a 13-6 run for a seven-point lead. The Fighting Scots tied the game at 20-20 with a 14-7 run. The Owls scored four out of the next seven points to take a 24-23 lead. Gordon closed out the set by forcing an attack error, Snyder and Jamie Tafoya recording a kill, and a service ace by Curtiss.

The Fighting Scots won the second set 25-7 and recorded a match-high 12 kills and a .647 hitting percentage. They started the set with a 12-2 run and never let it get any closer as they closed out the set with a 13-5 run.

Gordon won the third set 25-11 and held Maine-Presque Isle to two kills in the set. The Owls kept it close as 7-6 early on, but the Fighting Scots scored nine straight points to take a 16-6 lead. They closed out the set and the match with a 9-5 run.

Tafoya led Gordon with ten kills. Jordan Shaduk recorded career-highs in kills with six, in aces with five, and in blocks with two. Gergins had a team-high 26 assists.

The Fighting Scots play their last game of the Brandeis Invitational tomorrow Sept. 8 at 12 p.m. against Brandeis.
