Scots Stymie Pioneers In Five-Set Thriller

Gordon College Women's Volleyball opened up their weekend tournament with a 3-2 win over the Smith College Pioneers this evening. The Fighting Scots are participating in the Hall of Fame Tournament hosted by Smith and Amherst College.

For the Fighting Scots, Ashlyn Gergins dished out 43 assists, Jenny Curtiss had 30 digs, Sophia Scola had 21 digs, Amanda Snyder had a team-high 15 kills as well as 22 digs, and Jamie Tafoya registered 10 kills.

How It Happened
  • The first set saw a trio of lead changes and four ties before the Fighting Scots jumped out to a 22-15 lead. However, the Pioneers closed out the set on an 11-2 run to win, 26-24.
  • The Scots called a timeout as they trailed 13-9 and came out of the break focused, scoring five-straight points to take the 14-13 edge. Smith and Gordon traded 4-0 runs before the Scots buckled down to take set two, 25-21.
  • A Curtiss service ace gave the blue and white an 18-11 advantage late. Not going down easy, Smith came within one (20-19) before the Fighting Scots went up 2-1 after a 25-21 set three victory.
  • Smith paced the fourth set after a pair of small runs en route to a 25-21 win to force a fifth set.
  • Snyder and Tafoya guided the Scots to a quick 3-0 lead to open up the deciding set. Trailing 7-8, the Scots scored four unanswered points causing Smith to call a timeout. The timeout gave Smith some life but the Fighting Scots held on for the 15-12 victory to secure the overall 3-2 win.
