Leopards Stave Off Scots In Five

Traveling into Boston today, Gordon College Volleyball battled through five sets, eventually falling 3-2 to the Wentworth Institute Leopards in their final contest of the 2019 regular season. The Fighting Scots head into the postseason with a record of 14-12 and 4-4 in league action.

How It Happened
  • The Scots doubled up WIT, 10-5 and never looked back taking the first set by a score of 25-17 to take the 1-0 lead.
  • Tied at 13-all, the Leopards tallied three consecutive points to take the slim 16-13 lead. However, that lead was short lived as the Scots continued to fight to grab an 18-17 edge which forced a WIT timeout. Coming out of the break, the Leopards regrouped to go on a 4-0 run to lead 21-18 resulting in a Gordon timeout. Despite Gordon earning the next two points coming out of the timeout, the Leopards closed out the set, 25-21 to tie it at 1-1.
  • In the third frame, Jenny Curtiss served up a pair of aces giving Gordon the 4-1 advantage. WIT, however, stayed in it, going on top 10-8 before the Scots orchestrated a 7-2 run to take the 15-12 lead. Two points was the closest the Leopards would get at Gordon won, 25-18.
  • Gordon stormed out to a 7-0 run in the fourth frame forcing WIT to use a timeout. Not backing down, Wentworth put together a 5-0 run to come within two (11-9). Tied at 24, 25, 26, and 27, Gordon went ahead 28-27 on an Amanda Snyder kill, but WIT capitalized on a few Scot errors to win the set, 30-28.
  • Despite Gordon holding onto a narrow lead for the majority of the fifth set, the Leopards were able to go use a 4-1 run late to win the fifth set, 15-12 and overall 3-2 victory.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Marla Batson tied her career-high of 11 kills.
  • The Scots earned the No. 6 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament and will head back to Boston to face Wentworth in the CCC Quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 5.
