Scots Make It Three In A Row After 91-82 Victory Over Falcons

Gordon College Men's Basketball traveled to Fitchburg, Massachusetts to take on the Falcons of Fitchburg State University earlier tonight. The Scots tallied their third win in a row after beating the Falcons 91-82 to improve to 4-2 on the young season.

Senior Eric Demers paced the Scots with 31 points and five rebounds, Garrett Sattazahn filled up the stat line with 17 points, five assists, and four rebounds while Avelino Damoura chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds in tonight's victory.

The Falcons were led by Xavier Betancourt (Fr./Tampa, Fla.) who had 21 points, three assists, and two steals, and Dominik Williams (So./Newark, N.J.) and Charlie Doss (Jr./Fitchburg, Mass.) who tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively.

How it Happened
  • Both teams traded baskets to start the opening minutes until back-to-back three pointers from Demers and Justin Yu gave the Scots a six point tilt, until the Falcons', Tayjaun McKenzie (So./Lynn, Mass.) converted a three of his own to bring the score to 16-13 with 13 minutes to play in the half.
  • Both teams continued to go point for point until Gordon freshman Zachary Bennett connected on a three to give the Scots the 44-40 lead going into halftime.
  • The Scots lead grew to six immediately coming out off halftime after a layup from Parker Omslaer, but the Falcons would waste no time knocking down three straight shots to bring the game to a 46-46 draw two minutes into the second half.
  • Back-to-back three pointers from Demers and Sattazahn sparked the Scots' second half offense as they went up nine points with 15 minutes to go in the half. The Falcons kept knocking on the door until Damoura took over and scored seven straight points for Gordon to give the Scots the 73-57 lead with nine minutes to play.
  • The Falcons got within three points of the Scots with two minutes to play in regulation. The Scots went 6-8 from the charity stripe in the closing minute to ice out the game and take home the 91-82 victory.
Beyond the Box
  • Freshman, Garrett Sattazahn had a career night as he notched career-highs in both points and assists with 17 and five, respectively.
  • Tonights' 31 point performance from Eric Demers marked his forth game of the season with 30 or more points.
  • Said Head Coach Tod Murphy: "Fitchburg State is a very quick and athletic team that gave our zone significant troubles. It was a solid all around game for us offensively, but we gave up way too many open shots on defense. I was concerned we would come out flat because we had a much longer bus ride than expected, so our pregame routine was thrown off. In that situation, we need to get a spark from the bench, and we did. We had great contributions from Avelino Damoura, Justin Yu, and Zac Bennett who combined to score 24 points. It was a gutsy win against a good team, so I am pleased with the outcome."
