Fighting Scots Pick Up First Win In Twin Bill Split

On the second to last day at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, Gordon College Baseball rebounded from a game one loss to New Jersey City University and picked up their first win of the season, defeating Montclair by a score of 4-2.

Game One:
  • NJCU got the bats going early, connecting on four straight hits en route to a 3-0 first inning lead. Matt Paulsen led off the second with a double and later scored on a perfectly executed squeeze to put Gordon on the board. The Knights got that run back in the top of the fifth, to take a 4-1 lead.
  • Joseph Mack and Mike Oley reached on singled up the middle with Mack eventually scoring to cut the lead to 4-2. NJCU added a run in the seventh and eighth taking the 6-2 victory over the Scots.
  • Gordon's Joe Pedulla started and went the first 7.0 innings in a loss (0-2). He struck out three, walked two, and allowed five runs (three earned) and eight hits.
Game Two:
  • In his usual leadoff spot, Daniel Quint stayed hot, singling up the middle and eventually stealing second and taking third on a passed ball with one out. John Lagerfedlt hit a deep ball to right, bringing in Quint for the game's first run.
  • It stayed scoreless until the top of the third when Quint again led off the inning but this time with a triple to left center. Chris Leavitt hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop, scoring Quint to put the Scots ahead, 2-0.
  • Not to be outdone, Montclair's Daniel Clemente (Fr./Tom's River, N.J.) laced a triple to right field, scoring a batter later to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth. The Scots got that run back the next inning after Cole Winkelmann came around to score thanks to Leavitt's second RBI of the day to lead, 3-1. Montclair closed the gap even more, crossing the plate in the bottom half of the inning to trail by a single run.
  • Winkelman crossed home again in the seventh, doubling up Montclair, 4-2 and eventual final score.
  • Starter, Derek Hudson, went 6.0 innings giving up a pair of runs while Daniel Ensign earned the save in 2.0 innings of work, striking out three.
