Dickinson Foils Scots' Late Rallies For DH Sweep

After picking up their first win of the 2019 season, Gordon College Baseball fought until the final out, but was swept by Dickinson College this evening by almost identical scores of 8-7 and 9-7 on their final day at the RussMattĀ Invitational in Auburndale, Florida.

The Fighting Scots fly home tomorrow and will face WPI on Tuesday, March 19 in a neutral site contest at New England Baseball Complex inĀ Northborough, Massachusetts with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Game One
  • Dickinson scored first, as the Red Devils put together a two-out rally, scoring a pair of runs to lead, 2-0 in the top of the third inning. In the bottom half of the same inning, Daniel Quint earned a hard-fought walk, putting him at first with one out. After advancing to second after Chris LeavittĀ walked, Christian Hodge ripped a single to left center, scoring Quint to cut the lead in half.
  • The Blue Devils tallied a pair of runs in their half of the following two innings bringing the lead to 6-1. Gordon added another to their score when Matt Paulsen singled to the right side scoring Josh PopovichĀ in the bottom of the fifth.
  • With two on, PopovichĀ belted a three-run homer to trail by one going into the final inning. Dickinson added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and they needed each one of them asĀ Gordon made a rally of their own.Ā
  • Alec Willey led off the final inning with a double to right and later scored along with pinch runner Justin Johnson to again trail by a single run, but the comeback fell short with Dickinson taking the 8-7 win.
Game Two
  • A Quint double, Hodge triple, and LeavittĀ single carried the Scots to a three run top of the first. The Red Devils got on the board in the bottom of the inning, but the Scots tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second, Dickinson scored four runs on five hits to take the momentum and lead, 6-5. Just as in the bottom of the seventh in game one, Willey and Johnson both touched home putting the Scots back up top, 7-6. The score remained in Gordon's favor until Dickinson put together a two-out rally to tie the ball game up in the bottom of the fourth.
  • BrianĀ Reilly (Jr./Morganville, N.J.)Ā tripled in the bottom of the sixth, driving in two to take the 9-7 edge going into the Scots' final at bat. Gordon had two on but could not get past third base, as Dickinson took game two by a score of 9-7.Ā

  • Rookie, Josh PopovitchĀ booked his first collegiate career homer to bring the Scots within one in the first game.
