Ninth Inning Rally Not Enough As Vikings Top Scots, 3-1

In their second game in as many days, Gordon College Baseball made the short trip to Salem, Massachusetts in a non-conference matchup against the Salem State University Vikings this afternoon and despite a ninth inning rally, the Fighting Scots lost by a score of 3-1.

For the Scots, Chris Leavitt and Matt Paulsen each went 2-4 at the plate in the loss with Paulsen driving in the Scots' lone run in the top of the ninth.

Andrew McLaughlin (Sr./Peabody, Mass.) struck out nine Gordon batters in 8.1 innings of work for the Vikings to pick up his second win of the season. Brendan Greene (Sr./Winchester, Mass.) had a team leading two hits for Salem, as well as knocking in the first run of the game.

How It Happened
  • In the home half of the fifth, Greene's singled up the middle to bring home Zac Duval (Sr./Middleton, Mass.) to put the Vikings up, 1-0. Two innings later, Salem's first four batters all got on base, scoring a pair of runs to take a 3-0 lead going into the final two innings.
  • Taking advantage of their last at bats, Christian Hodge and Leavitt ripped a single and double, respectively, in the top of the ninth forcing a pitching change for the Vikings. The move did not impact Paulsen, as the designated hitter connected with his second hit of the day, driving in Hodge to put the Scots on the board. However, closer, Brock Riley (Sr./Lowell, Mass.), settled down on the mound for the Vikings, securing the next two outs to take the two-run victory.
  • Gordon's pitching staff of Mark GadaletaDerek HudsonHunter Routhier, and Daniel Ensign combined for 10 strikeouts.
