Seahawks Sweep Scots In CCC Doubleheader

Gordon College Baseball traveled to Newport, Rhode Island this afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tilt against a top ranked Seahawks squad who silenced the Fighting Scots' bats in a doubleheader sweep. Due to field conditions, Salve hosted the contest but the Scots remained the designated home team on the afternoon.

The Fighting Scots will take a break from conference play with two non-league midweek matchups. First, traveling to Dean on Tuesday, March 26 for a 3:30 p.m. start and then hosting their home-opener following day, March 27 for a first pitch at 3:30 p.m. versus Colby-Sawyer.

Game One
  • Salve's Patrick Maybach (Jr./Saunderstown, R.I.) was lights out, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth. The southpaw went eight innings, striking out 12 of the 27 batters he faced.
  • Zack Smith (Sr./New Canaan, Conn.) put his squad up early, as the senior knocked in a pair of runs in the top of the first which proved to be the eventual game-winning runs for the Seahawks. After leading 3-0 after one, Salve added a single run in the second, sixth, eighth, and ninth to shutout the Scots, 7-0.
Game Two
  • Smith again got the scoring going for Salve, driving in a run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Chris Leavitt led off the bottom of the second with a double, but was stranded at third.
  • The Seahawks used a four-run fifth inning to take a seven-run lead before putting up another in the top half of the eighth.
  • Leavitt stayed hot, driving in a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the Scots on the board cutting the lead to six. However, the Scots were retired in order in their final at-bats, falling to Salve by a score of 8-2
Beyond The Box Score
  • Chris Leavitt has laced a double in four consecutive games.
  • Salve's Patrick Maybach has recorded double-digit strikeouts in three out of his four appearances this season.
