Lions Sweep Fighting Scots In Spring Break Opener

Gordon College Baseball was swept in a double-header against Penn State Altoona to open up their spring break trip today at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational by scores of 1-5 and 4-6.

The Fighting Scots are back at it tomorrow in a double-header against St. Joseph's College of Maine starting at 4:30 p.m. The Lions concluded their spring break action tonight and will be back on the diamond March 19 as they travel to Frostburg State for a 3 p.m. start time.

Game One:
  • Both pitchers were in control early on, with two straight scoreless innings before the Lions used a little small ball to put some pressure on the Fighting Scots. Gordon's defense finished the inning strong with a 6-4-3 double play but not before Penn State Altoona put a pair of runs on the board.
  • In the top half of the fifth, Patrick Tevenan ripped a double to left center, scoring Nick Raimo. With Tevenan in scoring position, Chris Leavitt hit a single up the middle, but Tevenan was tagged out on a close call at the plate to end the inning.
  • With the bases loaded, Virga hit the green to score two, taking the 5-1 lead heading into the visitor half of the sixth. The Scots were not able to muster up anymore offense, falling to the Lions, 1-5.
  • Starter, Clayton Hain (Fr./Schaefferstown, Pa.), went the distance for the Lions, giving up one run and striking out eight in his first collegiate victory.
Game Two:
  • The Lions again got on the board first in game two with a three-run second inning. After Justin Johnson was hit by a pitch and Alec Willey hit a single, Christian Hodge laid down a bunt scoring Johnson after the pitcher airmailed it over first. The Scots took advantage of two more Lion errors in the inning to tie it up at three.
  • Penn State added another run in the top half of the third to take the 4-3 edge. With runners at first and second, the Lions looked to get another run across, but Danny Quint's heads up double play got the Scots out of the fourth unscathed.
  • The Scots used their stellar play on defense to get the offense going in the home half of the inning. Quint launched a double to left field and quickly found himself at third after a steal. Fellow senior Leavitt drove in Quint to tie up the game at four.
  • However, a two run sixth inning for the Lions was all the scoring they needed as they took game two by a score of 6-4.
Beyond The Box Score:
  • Rookie Patrick Tevenan, hit his first career double in game one.
  • Freshman, Daniel Ensign, made his first appearance of the season, retiring the Lions in order in the bottom of the sixth.
