Seniors Carry Scots To CCC Sweep Over Colonels

Gordon College Baseball celebrated Senior Day with a walk-off win in game one (4-3) and a 10-run mercy rule victory (13-3) in the night cap, sweeping the visiting Curry College Colonels in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play this afternoon.

The Fighting Scots return to action on Tuesday, April 18 as they host Bridgewater State at 3:30 p.m.

Game One
  • Curry struck first in the top of the third thanks to a Tyler Jenkins (Sr./East Bridgewater, Mass.) RBI single to put the Colonels up 1-0.
  • An inning later, Joseph Mack ripped a single to the left side to bring home Matt Paulsen to tie it up at one each.
  • A pair of RBI singles in the next two innings put the Colonels up by two heading into the home half of the sixth. The score would stay 3-1 in Curry's favor until the bottom of the eighth when senior, Christian Hodge belted a two-run blast over the right field fence to tie it up again.
  • Heading into their final at bat, Gordon's Mike Oley led off the ninth with a single through the right side. With Oley at second and two outs, Daniel Quint laced a walk-off single up the middle to bring Oley home to win 4-3.
  • Joe Pedulla went the distance, allowing seven hits and only surrendering two earned runs.
Game Two
  • It was scoreless until Chris Leavitt led off the third inning with a double to center and later came around to score after Quint's speed confused the Colonel defense allowing Leavitt to score on a ball that did not leave the infield. John Lagerfeldt hit a sacrifice fly to score Quint to take the early 2-0 lead.
  • Curry matched the Scots' run total in the top of the fourth to make it a tie ballgame at 2-2.
  • In the home half of the fifth, a pair of sacrifice flies by Mack and Patrick Tevenan allowed Paulsen and Hodge to cross the plate to put Gordon up by two.
  • Gordon extended its lead to four runs, heading into the seventh when the Scots tacked on three more runs which was capped off by an Alec Willey two-run dinger to put the Scots on top, 10-3.
  • The Scots finished it off in the bottom of the eighth as Gordon crossed the plate three more times, with the third run coming off of another sacrifice fly from Willey to score Lagerfeldt which solidified the 10-run mercy rule victory for the Scots.
  • Derek Hudson pitched seven innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out five.
