Playing host to Salem State University in the season-opener for both teams at the Brigham Athletic Complex this afternoon, Gordon College Field Hockey was edged out by the visiting Vikings, 2-1, despite outshooting their guests, 16-6, in the outing.
Cara Goudie was the lone scorer for the Fighting Scots, while Salem's Marissa Laganas (So./Beverly, Mass.) and Melanie Mason (Fr./Beverly, Mass.) were responsible for the Vikings' offensive output on the day.
The Scots get back to work tomorrow as they welcome Rivier College for a non-conference matchup at Brigham. Opening whistle is set for 1 p.m.
How It Happened
- Both teams were evenly paced offensively in the early going with one shot apiece, but it was the Vikings who made their strike count as Laganas (Beverly, Mass.) converted a Casie Curtin (Sr./Wrentham, Mass.) feed at the 16:40 mark for the 1-0 lead.
- That score held through the next 23 minutes of play until Salem's Mason fired an Allison Couillard (So./Tewksbury, Mass.) pass beyond Gordon keeper Julia Altman to extend the lead to 2-0.
- The Scots inched closer in the waning minutes when Goudie polished off an unassisted effort at 49:34, but that proved as close as they would get as Salem tightened up on the defensive end to secure the one-goal victory.
