Scots Bounce Back In The Second Half To Defeat The Leopards, 81-77

This evening, Gordon College Men's Basketball hosted the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup. The Fighting Scots outscored the Leopards by 12 in the second half to come back and steal the 81-77 victory. The Scots improve to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in CCC play.

For the Scots Eric Demers led the charge with 32 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals, Garrett Sattazahn had 23 points while dishing out three assists and Aljernod Terry, Parker Omslaer, and Justin Yu each had six points and four rebounds in tonight's victory.

The Leopards were paced by Stephen Azums (Sr./Hyde Park, Mass.) who had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists, Kyle Henseler (Jr/ Coventry, R.I.) had 17 points, Kevin Fernandez (So./Lawrence, Mass.) had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Trey Carrier (Jr./Wilton, N.H.) had 12 points in the loss.

How It Happened
  • The Scots jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead after a Demers' three in the opening two minutes of the game. The Leopards brought themselves back into the game five minutes later when Fernandez answered another Demers' three with one of his own to bring the game to a 14-14 standstill. Carrier then went on a 5-0 run for the Leopards for their first lead of the game.
  • With just under five minutes to go in the first half, the Leopards dominated the paint going on an 11 point run to extend their lead to 37-26 before Sattazahn drilled a three-pointer to stop the bleeding and cut the Scots deficit to eight going into halftime.
  • Seven minutes into the second half, the Leopards got their largest lead of the game after Henesler hit a three pointer to give the Leopards the 60-40 advantage. In the following six minutes the Leopards would only score seven points while the Scots erupted for 22 points, with 18 of those points coming from behind the arc, to take the 68-67 lead
  • Back-to-back three pointers from Demers and Yu gave the Scots a three-point lead with 3:48 remaining on the clock . The Scots would convert on seven free throws down the stretch to solidify their 81-77 victory.
Beyond the Box
  • Freshman, Garrett Sattazahn, had a career high 23 points on 8-13 shooting in tonights victory for the Scots.
  • Said Head Coach Tod Murphy: " WOW!!!  What a great comeback win!  Wentworth is a good team, and to show the courage to dig deep and comeback from 20 points down is a game that can catapult a season. Garrett Sattazahn, Eric Demers, and Justin Yu made big shots during the run, but the team defense the last 10 minutes was exceptional. Parker Omslaer and AJ Terry didn't allow any easy baskets during that stretch, and that turned the game around. I'm very proud of our team."
