Pilgrims Edge Scots In OT Heartbreaker

Hosting the New England College Pilgrims this afternoon for their season opener, Gordon College Men's Lacrosse battled into overtime, but the visiting Pilgrims bested the Fighting Scots by a score of 13-12.

For the Scots, Jason Dantona had four goals while Dan Arthur netted three goals. Noah Johnson booked nine ground balls as well as causing five turnovers. Keeper Jay Gallipo made 18 saves.

NEC was led by Connor Smith (Jr./Oakland, Maine) and Patrick Storie (Jr./Williamstown, Mass.) who each recorded four goals each in the win.

How It Happened
  • A little over six minutes into the first, Gordon's Jacob Hryzan laced a ball into the back of the net to put the Scots up 1-0. NEC answered back scoring a pair of goals to double up the Scots, 2-1 with 5:42 left in the quarter. With 12 seconds left on the clock, Xander Miller knotted it up at 2-2.
  • In the second, NEC's Storie and Smith recorded their second and third goals, respectively, of the contest to extend NEC's lead to two-goals. Charles Hacking (Jr./Canterbury, N.H.) got in on the scoring parade to widen the gap to 5-2 with 9:44 to go until the half.
  • However, the Fighting Scots had enough and caught fire as the blue and white closed out the half on a 4-0 run to hold a 6-5 lead at the break.
  • Both sides went goal for goal in the third which landed in Gordon's favor as the Scots were able to remain on top (9-8) heading into the final 15 of regulation.
  • The Pilgrims drew first blood in the fourth to tie it up at 9-9 before tacking on another goal to take a one-goal advantage. Gordon returned the favor five minutes later, tying it up at 10-all before adding the go ahead goal (11-10) with 3:18 on the clock. With 1:42 on the clock, Storie registered his fourth goal of the contest to lock it up once again.
  • With just six seconds left in regulation, Dantona ripped a shot passed NEC keeper Tucker Anglemyer (So./Kunletown, Pa.) to put Gordon up 12-11 which looked to be the game-winner.
  • The Pilgrims had other ideas however, as Jacob Blanchette (Sr./Weare, N.H.) let it fly as time expired to tie it at 12-all, forcing overtime.
  • NEC took three shots in OT with the third being the game-winner as the Pilgrims took home the 13-12 win over the Scots.
