Game Recap: Baseball |

Scots Split On Second To Last Day In Florida

Gordon College Baseball battled Penn State Brandywine this afternoon in Auburndale, Florida. The Lions bested the Scots in the first game of the double header by a score of 11-4. In the second game, the Scots hot start carried them to the 7-5 victory to bring their record to 7-4 on the season.

Game One:
  • The Lions made it a 1,2,3 inning to start the first before turning in five runs of their own capped off by a Jack Hedger (So./Oxford, Pa.) two-RBI single to give his squad the early 5-0 lead.
  • The Scots began to chip away in the top of the third when Matt Paulson launched a sacrifice fly to right field which would allow Timothy Oh to cross the plate for the Scots' first run of the game. Mike Oley made it to first off a walk and would advance to second but he would not stop there as he made it home off an Erik Gauer single. Brad Welch would cap things off for the Scots when he connected on a two-RBI single to bring the game to cut the Lions lead to 5-4 going into the fourth.
  • The Lions opened things back up in the home half of the sixth when they strung together five hits to bring home six runs to take the 11-4 lead. The Lions sixth inning surge would prove to be enough as they held the Scots to no hits and no runs in the top of the seventh to take the 11-4 win.
Game Two:
  • The Scots were out for revenge in the first two innings of the game after having six runs cross the plate off a big second inning. Starting the inning, Demers put himself in scoring position after taking one for the team and he then found his way to third after Welch doubled to left field. Demers and Welch both crossed the plate for the Scots after a hit on Gordon's behalf and an error on Branywine's. Oley was then able to drive in two more after sending the ball to center field but it would not be the last RBI of the inning as Paulson brought John Lagerfeldt home on a sacrifice fly to give the Scots the commanding 6-0 lead.
  • The Lions' rally began in the top of the third when Joe Hurley (So./Downingtown, Pa.) hit a two-RBI triple before he crossed home on his own accord to cut the Scots' lead in half.
  • Two innings later, the Lions came within one run after a single by Nick Wright (So./Aston, Pa.) brought the score to 6-5 going into the home half of the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Josh Popovitch helped his squad extend their lead when he doubled to left to bring Lagerfeldt across the plate. The 7-5 margin would prove to be enough after Oley struck out two batters in the top half of the final inning to secure the win for the Scots.
Beyond The Box Score
  • The Scots finish their stint in Florida tomorrow as they take on the Chargers Colby Sawyer College at 9:15 a.m. and then again at 11:45 a.m.
