Scots' Bats Comes Alive To Sweep Cougars In Florida

Gordon College Baseball opened up their spring break trip with a double-header against Chatham University in Florida. In the first game, the Scots rallied back in the bottom of the sixth to take home the 10-6 win over the Cougars. The Scots' offense stayed hot in the second game to carry them to the 10-9 win. The Scots are now 3-0 on the young season.

The Scots have another double-header tomorrow as they take on Anna Maria College in Altamonte Springs, Florida with start times of 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m..

Game One
  • The Cougars wasted no time as Caleb Leham (So./Monroeville, Pa.) singled down the left field line to bring two runners home but the 2-0 lead was cut in half when Shane Demers connected on a single to bring in Matt Paulsen which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Cougars after one inning.
  • In the third, the Cougars extended their lead after they tallied three hits and three runs while holding the Scots to one run in the bottom half of the inning to widen the gap 5-2 in their favor.
  • The Cougars would score one more run in the sixth inning before the Scots completely dominated the bottom half of the inning. The Scots complied five hits that brought in eight runs. Jalen Coyne- Martinez got the Scots on their feet as he doubled to right center to bring in Demers and move a runner to third. The Scots' following two batters were walked to bring in another run and leave the bases loaded for Mike Oley, who would drive in a runner which brought the game to a tie at six. Paulsen then stepped up to the plate to give the Scots their first lead of the day with a two RBI double to left. After that, the Scots would score two more runs to bring the score to 10-6 entering the final inning.
  • Hunter Routhier carried the Scots to the 10-6 victory after striking out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the seventh.
Game Two
  • The Scots picked up right where they left off as Paulsen hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to begin the first. Then Demers singled through the left side and continued to be an offensive threat by stealing second. Brad Welch rounded off the inning with a deep double to center that brought Demers in and gave the Scots the early 3-0 advantage. In the bottom half of the first, the cougars got two hits of their own and scored one run, to cut the Scots lead to two.
  • The Cougars evened the score at three in the bottom of the second before Justin Johnson regained the 5-3 lead for the Scots in the top of third with a monster shot over the center field fence that also brought home Demers.
  • The Cougars tacked on a run in both the third and fourth innings to bring the game to a 5-5 draw entering the fifth. Once again, Demers was there to fire up the Scots with a double and then a stolen base to put him in scoring position. Welch then sent a deep single down the right field line to bring in Demers and regain the lead. Two more one RBI doubles from Josh Popovitch and Lagerfeldt would extend the Scots lead to 8-5. The Cougars started to come back alive in the bottom half of the fifth when Owen Kravetz (Fr./Altoona, Pa.) sent a two-run homer over the left field fence to bring the Cougars within one entering the sixth inning.
  • In the top of the sixth, Welch hit his second double of the game, to bring two teammates past home plate and retake the 10-7 lead.
  • The Cougars were able to hold the Scots runless in the top of the seventh and started a rally of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Leham hit a two-run shot over the fence in left center to bring his squad within one. But this is as close as the Cougars would get as Dan Ensign struck out two of three batters and had help from his defense on the other to close out the game and secure the 10-9 victory.
