Scots Clinch Playoff Birth In Senior Day OT Thriller

Gordon College Field Hockey celebrated senior day by welcoming the Seahawks of Salve Regina University today at the Brigham Athletic Complex in their final Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest of the season. The Fighting Scots secured a playoff birth with their exciting 2-1 overtime win.

How It Happened
  • Both squads came out hungry to get ahead, battling back and forth for control with the Seahawks striking first followed up by two Scot shots on net, both of which were denied.
  • After a scoreless first quarter, Salve racked up seven penalty corner opportunities before finally capitalizing on their eighth after Kailyn McCue fed teammate Grace Parker who smacked one to the back of the cage to bring the Seahawks up 1-0 on the day.
  • Despite being down, the Scots continued their aggressive play in the third period which eventually paid off when Anna Rathbun knocked in Gordon's first goal of the game after following up a rebound from the Seahawks goalie to tie it up one all. The Seahawks attempted to answer back with two more shots before the period ended however the Scots' defense held strong.
  • Going into the fourth quarter with a tie score, both teams were eager to break the tie, firing off three shots each in total. With less than two minutes on the clock, the Seahawks attacked the cage but were shut down by Gordon's brick wall of a goalie Sophea Zaskoda. After crawling back to the opposite post to make a diving save, the Seahawks followed up with another attack which Zaskoda skillfully rejected seconds later.
  • After forcing an overtime period, the Scots didn't wait long to strike when Cara Goudie launched the first shot of the period. Salve's goalie rejected Goudie's attempt but the ball was quickly recovered by senior Scot Megan Gordon who hacked a shot at goal which was blocked and deflected back to Gordon, who finessed the game winning golden goal to lock in the nail-biting 2-1 victory.
