Scots Take One, Win One In Worcester

Gordon College Volleyball traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts today to compete against the Westfield State Owls and the WPI Engineers. Both matches went the distance, with Gordon splitting the contests.

How it Happened (vs. Westfield State)
  • The Fighting Scots and Owls were neck and neck the entire first set. Junior Valerie Nilan registered kills on consecutive points to put the Scots up 24-21, before later taking the set on a kill by freshman Annie Murphy.
  • In the third set, the Scots rallied off 11 straight points to take a 21-15 lead, as they closed the set off with a 25-22 win.
  • With a 12-11 lead late in the fifth set, the Fighting Scots got three straight kills from juniors Macie Carroll and Emily Schneider to take the set 15-11, and the match 3-2.
How it Happened (vs. WPI)
  • Gordon grabbed the first set, 25-23, as an ace from senior Hayley Robinson ace secured the first set victory for the Fighting Scots.
  • After dropping the second and third sets, the Scots came out on fire, grabbing an 8-0 lead in the fourth. The Scots finished strong to give Gordon a 25-14 win.
  • In the winner-take-all fifth set, Gordon and WPI split the first 20 points, 10-10, before five unanswered points from the Engineers secured the victory for WPI.
Beyond the Box Score
  • The Fighting Scots had many players earn career-highs in today's matches. Senior Hayley Robinson totaled 30 digs (vs. WSU); juniors Macie Carroll and Emily Schneider registered 11 kills and 12 kills, respectively; sophomore Kate Howe booked 50 assists (vs. WSU); and freshman Annie Murphy tallied 13 kills (vs WSU).
  • The Fighting Scots are back in action for a home conference matchup with the Curry College Colonels on Wednesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. at the Bennett Center.
