Today, the Fighting Scots Men's Basketball team traveled to Dudley, Massachusetts to avenge their double overtime loss last night against the Bison of Nichols College. The teams went head to head once again, with a final score of 84-83, but this time in Gordon's favor.
The Bison came out with a well-rounded offense, led by Jack Cowan with 19 points, complemented by Jason O'Regan and Mike Lasalandra who had 18 points apiece. Junior Uga came down with 19 rebounds.
It was a well-rounded effort from the Scots, but senior
Josh Crutchfield led the way with 19 points, followed by a strong performance from
Drew Thibeault who put 16 on the board.
How It Happened
- Just 17 seconds in, Garrett Sattazahn, still hot off of last night's performance, sunk a three with an assist from Zachary Bennett. Less than a minute later Sattazahn put down another three to put the Scots up by six.
- With five minutes left in the first half, an offensive rebound and put back from Thibeault extended Gordon's lead to 22 points, but the Bison responded with an 8-3 run to inch their way back.
- Crutchfield silenced them before the half with a three-pointer to keep the lead at 20 going into halftime.
- It felt like déjà vu as Sattazahn made another three pointer less than a minute into the second half.
- Almost halfway through the second half, Cowan hit a three pointer so spark the Bison's offense, which went on a 34-7 run for the next eight minutes
- Back to back three's from Nichols then cut the lead to four, rallying back to tie it up 80-80 with a minute and a half left in regulation
- A free throw from Parker Omslaer and a three from Crutchfield put the Scots in the lead once again, and the Bison responded with a three with 17 seconds left, but it was not enough. The Scots held off to win 84-83.
Beyond The Box Score
- The Scots bench produced 35 of the 49 first half points.
- Josh Crutchfield's 19 points is a new career high for the senior.
- Said Head Coach Tod Murphy: "I was very pleased with how our team played today. With 10 minutes to go in the game, I made the coaching mistake of taking the foot off of the throttle. You can't do that against a championship team like Nichols. We collectively let up, and allowed them back into the game, but we were still able to come away with the victory. For 30 minutes we dominated that game, and got contributions from several different players. Josh Crutchfield, Drew Thibeault, and Justin Yu helped stake us to our big lead. The bottom line is we got a win against Nichols. We will take that every time."
