Traveling to Weymouth, Massachusetts this afternoon for their season opener against Eastern Nazarene, Gordon College Baseball was upset in game one thanks to a late rally by the Lions in the bottom of the seventh before falling 13-1 in game two.
Game One
- The first inning for ENC started off strong defensively as Lions' pitcher, Morgan Weast struck out the side in order. Despite a leadoff double by Max Miednik in the home half of the first, Joe Pedulla struck out a pair of Lions before Pat Tevenan threw out Miednik trying to steal third to end the inning.
- The Scots came off the field hungry for hits in the top of the second. Gordon's string of hits were catalyzed by Tevenan who led off the inning roping a single to left center. Teammate Evan Paquette then followed that up by belting a double to left center, advancing Tevenan to third. Tevenan then scored on a walk forced by Hunter Routhier with bases loaded. The hits were contagious as Dalton Cody kept the Scots' streak alive with a perfectly placed single to second base in order to score Paquette for the Scots' second run of the game.
- Pedulla thanked his teammates in the bottom of the second by striking out three of the four Lions' batters who entered the batter's box. However, the Lions dug deep defensively to hold Gordon at two runs and no more hits until the sixth.
- After two scoreless innings, Pedulla passed the ball off to fellow senior Mark Gadaletta who also held the Lions scoreless until ENC veteran Steven Pesce stepped up to the plate, rocketing a solo home run over the left field fence to put the Lions on the board for the first time that evening.
- Paquette kept his bat hot as he started off the rally for the Fighting Scots in the top of the sixth with a single up the middle. Classmate Jalen Coyne-Martinez copied Paquette with another hit up the middle in order to bring his teammate home making the score 3-1 in favor of the Scots. The scoring was infectious as Connor Hartman launched a single to right field resulting in two RBIs.
- The Scots held the Lions to one run until Shane McNamara punched a three-run homer over the right field fence, deflating Gordon's lead to one run. With just two outs remaining in the game, Jamie Carey stirred the pot with a single shot to center, forcing pressure on the Scots resulting in a 5-6 win for the Lions.
Game Two
- ENC put up a two spot on the board early thanks to a two-run shot again off the bat of McNamara in the bottom of the first. After a scoreless third, McNamara belted his third dinger of the night over the right field fence to make it a 4-0 game in favor of ENC.
- Doing his part on the mound in the home half of the fifth, Gordon's hurler Drew McCormack sat down all three batters he faced by way of the K to keep the Lions off the bases.
- In the top of the sixth, C. Hartman earned a walk to put the leadoff runner on and through smart base running made his way to third, just 90 ft from putting the Scots on the board. After an ENC pitching change, Mike Oley hit a deep fly ball to left for a sac fly to score Hartman to make it 4-1.
- The Lions' bats caught fire in the bottom of the sixth, scoring nine runs en route to a 13-1 win over the Scots.
