Continuing Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play, Gordon College Men's Basketball traveled to Boston this afternoon to face the Leopards of Wentworth (WIT). Just over a month ago (December 4, 2021) the Fighting Scots narrowly defeated WIT on their home court 61-58 after a neck and neck competition and nail-biting second half comeback. Today, Gordon overcame the Leopards once again after coming from behind, however, this time the Scots showed no mercy and smothered their hosts, 83-64.
Parker Omslaer showcased his mastery of the game in today's battle, guiding the Scots to victory with a game-high 24 points and 14 rebounds. The upperclassmen continued to lead the way for the Fighting Scots as
David Massillon chipped in 14 points while grabbing almost as many rebounds with 13. Meanwhile,
Garrett Sattazahn added 12 points for the Scots.
For Wentworth, senior
Kevin Fernandez booked 17 points followed by classmate
Trey Carrier who earned a double-double after sinking 16 points and collecting 11 rebounds.
How It Happened
- Starting off strong, the Leopards quickly gained a 9-2 edge after a seven point run less than two minutes into the competition. However, the Fighting Scots got back in the game to even out the score and eventually go ahead 13-12 thanks to Omslaer who took advantage of his free throws, forcing a Wentworth timeout.
- From that moment on, WIT took the lead that they would not let go of, although, the Scots continued to retaliate as they tied it up four times in the remainder of the close half (18-18, 20-20, 24-24, 30-30). After the score reached 30-all with 1:41 left, Wentworth went on to score six points, while Gordon broke up their streak with a layup from Bryce Smith to end the half 36-32 in favor of the Leopards.
- After opening up the second half with almost two minutes of scoreless play, Omslaer got things going for the Scots with a layup to come within two points of another tie. However, the Leopards took advantage of four free throw opportunities to lengthen their lead to six (42-36).
- Wentworth started to get riled up at minute fifteen, scoring eight consecutive points to take their first double digit lead, 50-39. After seeing their biggest deficit of the game, Omslaer sparked a fire in the Fighting Scots, spearheading a massive 23 points streak to gain their biggest advantage of the game, 72-58.
- Wentworth finally answered back with a three-pointer from Fernandez which was soon shut down by Massillon's court silencing dunk. The Leopards attempted to regain their long lost lead, however the Scots' could not be tamed, hitting nine of their next 12 shots to ultimately take the commanding 83-64 win.
