Traveling to Boston tonight, Gordon College Men's Basketball battled the Rams of Suffolk University in a nail-biting duel. The Fighting Scots started off strong, holding the lead for the majority of the game until the Rams finally broke through in the final minutes of the contest, highlighted by a buzzer-beating shot to lock in the 86-84 win.
Gordon's valiant efforts were headed by hot Scot
Parker Omslaer, who booked 19 points on the night while bringing down nine rebounds. Freshman
Bryce Smith was just behind him with 17 points while adding four assists. Meanwhile,
Garrett Sattazahn helped the Scots out with 14 points and 10 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season.Â
For the Rams,
Keenan Robertson contributed 19 points as well as 11 rebounds. Next,
Nate Hale added 16 points in the mix followed by
John Gates who recorded 12 points while dishing out six assists.Â
How It Happened
- The Fighting Scots drew first blood thanks to a free throw from David Massillon, however the Rams quickly answered back with a three before Sattazahn did the same for the Scots (4-3). After over three minutes of back and forth control, Osmlaer finally broke the eight point tie to get the Scots rolling, catalyzing a nine point run before Suffolk could get in another three (17-11).
- Gordon continued to dominate the half, adding to their advantage and eventually securing an 11 point lead with 10:42 to go (26-15). The Rams attempted to cut the deficit, however the Fighting Scots continued to hit their shots, holding onto their double digit lead for almost the entire remainder of the half until Suffolk hit a three with two seconds left to end the half 47-39Â in favor of the Scots.
- Next, the Fighting Scots came back on the court with a bang as Massillon made a statement with a dunk to regain Gordon's 10 point lead (49-39). The Scots were able to stay in control until Rams' Gates sunk one from downtown to shrink their deficit to eight, shortly before Suffolk came within one thanks to another three from Robertson (59-60). Shortly after, Zach Quanico lengthened the Scots' lead again with a three-pointer of his own just 16 seconds later (63-59).
- After almost three minutes of scoreless play, the Rams hit another shot from three-point land to come close to a tie once again (62-63). But Gordon swiftly shut them down with back to back layups from Michael Makiej and Smith to regain a five point lead (67-62).Â
- Both squads didn't back down, as they fought hard to surpass one another for the last nine minutes of action after Conor Creane got the Rams back in the game with a three. The Scots continued to hold their edge until 5:37 when Robertson took advantage of the charity stripe to finally tie it up 71 all, sparking the Rams to gain a four point lead before Gordon cut it to one thanks to the hot hands of Smith (74-75).Â
- The Rams continued to rally until there was just eight seconds left on the clock when Gordon's Smith made a jumper in the paint to tie it up at 84 all which seemed to send the game into overtime. However, Suffolk refused to go down, hustling until the last second when John Gates stepped back to hit a jumper as the buzzer went off to give Suffolk the winning basket and take the 86-84 win.Â
