Seahawks Best Scots In CCC Matchup

Traveling to Newport, Rhode Island this afternoon for their second Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup of the week, Gordon College Men's Basketball fell behind their hosts, Salve Regina, in the first half and was not able to pull ahead in the second half as the Seahawks defended their home court in a 93-73 win.

Garrett Sattazahn led the effort for the Fighting Scots as the junior recorded 14 points and five assists, Michael Makiej added 11 points, while David Massillon and Bryce Smith each netted 10 points. 

Salve Regina's Cameron Collins booked a game-high 26 points, Kevin Kelly chipped in 16 points, while Chris Peasley and Clay Brochu each had 14 points.

How It Happened
  • Both sides traded layups for their first buckets of the day and then for the next five minutes, the Scots hit five of their next seven shots to maintain the early edge before Salve briefly went on top, 13-12 at the 14:55 mark. Twenty ticks later, Sattazahn found Makiej for the three to regain the lead (15-13). 
  • The Scots added another layup to their total before the Seahawks went on a 9-0 run to flip the script and take the five-point lead (17-22). SRU eventually led by eight before Gordon cut the deficit to three on two separate occasions with 5:29 remaining in the half. However, SRU outscored the blue and white 19-2 down the stretch to hold a 50-30 lead at the break.
  • Getting off to a hot start in the second, Zach Quanico and Drew Thibeault each drained a three to open up the half. Continuing to hit their shots, the Scots trimmed the home team's edge to 13 points after a jumper from three-point land off the hands of Justin Yu with 10:35 to go in regulation. 
  • However, SRU netted the next 10 points to widen the gap to 78-55 en route to the 20-point win over the Scots.
Beyond The Box Score
  • After booking a season-high 10 points in today's game, David Massillon has now notched a season-high in points on Salve Regina's home court for the second time in his career. Massillon netted a season-high 14 points during the Scots' last trip to Newport in 2020.
  • Drew Thibeault grabbed a season-high seven boards today.
  • The Fighting Scots return to Kanas Court on Wednesday, January 12 as they host the University of New England Nor'easters at 7:30 p.m.
