Scots Sweep Seahawks In CCC Action

Gordon College Volleyball hit the court tonight for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) battle as they invited the Salve Regina University (SRU) Seahawks to Kanas Court where the Fighting Scots won three straight to improve to 6-1 in league play while the visitors drop to 4-3.

For the Scots, Kate Howe dished out 33 assists, Nikki Batson had 11 digs, while Annie Murphy and Jordan Shaduk recorded 18 and 10 kills, respectively.

How It Happened
  • After back and forth points to open up the first, the Scots widened the gap (12-5) thanks to a pair of aces from Howe and a flurry of kills from Shaduk and Murphy. The Seahawks, however, began to climb back and come within a single point twice but the blue and white held strong for the 25-19 win.
  • Throughout the first 15 points of the second frame, there were 10 lead changes and as many locked up scores as Salve looked to have the edge (20-17). Then, with the scoreboard reading 23-20 in favor of the Seahawks, the Fighting Scots took advantage of three Salve attack errors as well as another Murphy kill to shift the momentum the Scots' way to regain the edge, 24-23. Both sides again went point for point, but the Scots came out victorious with an ace from Alexa Quinones for the exclamation point (27-25).
  • In similar fashion, each side battled for the lead, with 14 lead changes and six ties leading to a 23-23 game. Valerie Nilan gave her squad to advantage with a kill (24-23) before Gordon used a Salve attack error for the final point (25-23) to seal the 3-0 win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Annie Murphy tied her career-high with 18 kills tonight and also recorded a new career-high with eight total blocks.
  • The Fighting Scots continue CCC action on Wednesday, October 26 in Bristol, Rhode Island when they square up against the Roger Williams Hawks at 7 p.m.
