Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Scots Drop To WPI And Colby

Gordon College Volleyball hosted a tri-match tournament this afternoon as they invited the WPI Goats along with the Colby College Mules for a pair of non-conference matches. First, the Fighting Scots faced WPI where they battled for a fourth set but eventually fell, 3-1. In the nightcap, Gordon sought revenge with the Mules from earlier this season but ultimately were shutout, 0-3.

Annie Murphy and Valerie Nilan led the Scots in both games, each recording 13 kills against WPI before booking 10 a piece versus Colby.

Gordon v. WPI
  • The Engineers and Gordon went head ot head, locking up the score at 9-9, 14-14, 15-15, and 17-17 before the Scots began to slowly widen the gap. However, WPI began to crawl their way back into contention, knotting the score up at 23-all, 24-all, and 25-all before taking advantage on a pair of Scot miscues to escape with the 27-25 win.
  • Similarly to the first frame, both sides went point for point in early, but it was WPI who pulled away mid way through the set en route to a 25-16 victory (2-0).
  • In the third, Gordon saw themselves up 7-5 and never looked back, playing in rhythm to go on a 7-0 run (23-13) before closing out the frame with the nine-point win (25-16).
  • After forcing a fourth set, the Scots jumped to a 10-8 lead before WPI fought back to grab a five-point edge (18-13). The Scots refused to go down, battling back to tie it up at 19-all however, the Goats went on a five-point rally to reach match point (24-19) before Gordon locked it up at 24 to head into extra points before WPI came back with a trio of kills to clinch the 3-1 win.
Gordon v. Colby
  • The Scots jumped out to an early 13-6 lead topped off by a kill from Murphy before the Mules slowly chipped away to make it a one-point game (15-16). However, Gordon held tight to their lead until Colby tied it up at 23, forcing a Scot timeout. After reconvening, the Fighting Scots gained the advantage 24-23 but the Mules recorded back to back kills to seal the first set, 26-24.
  • Murphy got her squad going with a powerful kill to grab the first point of the second set before taking a 6-2 lead. However, the Mules answered back with a 12-point run (15-7) that the Scots were unable to recover from, dropping the second set, 18-25.
  • The Mules were determined to close out the game in three sets, snatching a five-point advantage early on (8-3) before a Joey Keltner kill made it a one-point game (9-10). However, Colby continued to pour it on, taking the final set 25-17 to secure the 3-0 victory.
