Lions Sweep Scots In Non-Conference Twin Bill

After getting rained out yesterday, Gordon College Baseball and the Eastern Nazarene (ENC) Lions faced off in a twin bill at Trinity Stadium in Haverhill, Massachusetts this afternoon. The Lions ultimately swept the Fighting Scots, 5-3 and 16-10.

Game One
  • In their first action in New England this year, the Fighting Scots got ahead early in the top of the first thanks to a Patrick Tevenan RBI double to score teammate Shane Demers. With two down, Jonathan McIntyre singled through the right side before ending up on second due to an ENC miscue and sending Tevenan to third. Both Tevenan and McIntyre would eventually score thanks to a pair of wild pitches to give the Scots a 3-0 lead after one.
  • Right-hander Andrew Marzetta put together a 1,2,3 inning from the mound in the home half of the first before the Lions put pressure on the Scots' defense, scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the second to lock it up at 3-all.
  • However, ENC was able to bring the go ahead run across in the fifth before adding an insurance run in the sixth to secure the eventual 5-3 victory over the Scots.
Game Two
  • ENC struck first as the Lions strung together four hits to plate two runs in the top of the first to lead, 2-0. However, the Fighting Scots got those two runs back plus one as McIntyre and S. Demers got on with no outs to kick of the bottom of the first. Tevenan roped one through the left side to score McIntyre, then Andrew Hartman brought home Tevenan after an opposite field single to tie it up at 2-all. Jaylen Coyne-Martinez broke up the tie with a fielder's choice that brought home Robert Dunkle to put the Scots on top, 3-2.
  • With two down in the bottom of the second, ENC's Steven Pesce used his wheels to hit all the bases after an error in the outfield to knot it up at 3.
  • Gabe Coyne-Martinez opened up the home half of the second with a solo shot to left which spearheaded a four run second inning to put the Scots up, 7-3.
  • The Lions put up a seven spot in the top of the third to flip the script and take a 10-7 edge, but Tevenan cut it to a two-run ball game as the senior singled to left field to bring home Dalton Cody (10-8) in the home half of the third.
  • After a scoreless fourth, ENC tacked on four more runs in the fifth before adding one more in the eighth to double up the Scots, 16-8. Freshman Dunkle belted a two run homer in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to six but it wasn't enough as ENC took the 16-10 win and overall sweep in today's doubleheader.
