Knights Take Two From Scots In Season-Opener

Gordon College Baseball kicked off their 2022 campaign with a doubleheader against the Wartburg College Knights in Auburndale, Florida for the first day of the Russmatt Tournament. The Wartburg Knights came out swinging and swept the Fighting Scots, 15-2 and 7-2.

Game One
  • The Knights scored four in the home half of the first inning before tacking on a pair of runs in each of their next two chances to lead the Fighting Scots, 8-0.
  • After keeping the Knights off the board in the bottom of the fourth, the Scots took that momentum to the top of the fifth where rookie, Jonathan McIntyre laced a double down the right field line to open up the top of the inning. With McIntyre at third thanks to a wild pitch, Shane Demers hit one right back up the middle to bring in the Scots' first run of the year.
  • However, the Knights continued to roll, putting seven more runs on the board to extend their lead and eventually defeat the Scots, 15-2.
Game Two
  • In the bottom of the first, S. Demers belted a double to straightaway center to put the Scots in scoring position early. Two batters later, with two outs, senior Patrick Tevenan brought home S. Demers with a liner to right center to put Gordon on top, 1-0.
  • Gordon's starting pitcher Andrew Marzetta sat the Knights down in order in the next two innings before the Knights erupted for a five-run fourth to take a 5-1 edge.
  • Dalton Cody booked his first hit of the night in the bottom of the fifth and would eventually find himself 90 feet away from the plate after taking advantage of a few Knight miscues. Then, Andrew Hartman took advantage and hit a single through the left side to score Cody and cut the deficit to three.
  • The Knights, however, came right back and picked up insurance runs in the visitor half of the sixth and seventh to secure the 7-2 win over the Scots.

Beyond The Box Score
  • The Scots return to action tomorrow, March 5 as they face Finlandia for a doubleheader with the first game starting at 4 p.m.
  • Rookies, Jonathan McIntyre, David Melendez, and CJ Demers each recorded their first collegiate hits in game one. Additionally, freshman Brandon Bloom made his first appearance on the mound in relief, striking out three.
