On day two of the Russmat Tournament, Gordon College Baseball squared up against the Lions of Finlandia University tonight for a doubleheader in Auburndale, Florida. Both teams came to hit in the first, smashing nine hits each, however the Lions were the ones who came out on top, 13-5. In the second game of the night, the Fighting Scots rallied to take their first win of the young season, 9-6.
Game One
- Finlandia came out swinging, as they jumped to an early 7-0 lead in the third. However, the Scots quickly answered back, securing their first run of the game thanks to a sacrifice bunt from senior Patrick Tevanan to bring home Shane Demers. The next at bat, Andrew Hartman traded places with Demers after rocketing one through the right side to head into the fourth, 7-2.
- After holding the Lions scoreless the next inning, the Fighting Scots tacked one on in the bottom of the fourth to shrink their deficit to four. Both squads were held scoreless until the sixth when Gordon's Jonathan McIntyre crossed the plate after Tucker Destino roped one down the right field line to bring the score to 7-4.
- However, the Lions' bats got hot in their final ups, scoring six runs before the Scots could stop the bleeding. Although, the Scots went down with a fight as freshman Jake Blake sacrifice flied to score Robert Dunkle for their final run of the game before taking the 5-13 loss.
Game Two
- With the bases loaded in the visitor half of the first, Dunkle once again came through as the freshman hit a bases clearing single to right field before taking second after a Lion miscue. A batter later, Dalton Cody brought Dunkle home after a single to center to put the Scots on top, 4-0 heading into the bottom of the first.
- Trying to answer right back, Finlandia used four hits to bring across three Lions to make it a one-run game. After keeping Gordon off the board, the Lions tied it up in the bottom of the second before taking the lead the following inning (6-4). Not long after in the fifth, Dunkle recorded another RBI tonight after crushing a monstrous double to right center to drive in S. Demers to bring the Scots within one run.
- After holding the Lions at bay in the bottom of the fifth, the Fighting Scots got hot in the batters box. With the tying run in scoring position, S. Demers ripped one through the left side to score Blake and tie it up at 6-all. After fouling off multiple pitches, Tevanan finally got a hold of one as he punched a hit through the left side to give the Fighting Scots the go-ahead run, 7-6. Not satisfied with a one-run lead, Robert Dunkle stepped up to the plate and launched one to deep left center to bring two more across the plate. When the Scots took the field, rookie pitcher Brandon Bloom sat down every batter he faced that inning to head into the final frame, 9-6. The Fighting Scots held the visitors in the seventh, recording three straight outs to ultimately take the 9-6 win.
