Game Recap: Baseball |

Scots Weather The Storm To Take One From Fitchburg

Gordon College Baseball hit the Northeast Regional Park fields again this afternoon where they squared up against the Fitchburg Falcons. After a few rain delays, the Fighting Scots fell to the Falcons in the first, 6-2 before an extra inning bout in the second where the Scots earned their fourth victory in Florida, 5-4.

Game One
  • The Falcons got on the board early in the first, 2-0 and were able to hold the Fighting Scots scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Robert Dunkle made it a one-run game after crushing a deep fly ball to right field to bring home Shane Demers (2-1). However, Fitchburg immediately doubled their runs in the fifth to go up, 4-1.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Gabe Coyne-Martinez came barreling home after a double steal to give the Scots their second run of the game. However, the Falcons sealed the deal with two more runs in the seventh to ultimately take the 6-2 win.
Game Two
  • The Fighting Scots started off game two with a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a quick, 2-0 lead. Fitchburg answered back in the home half of the inning, crossing the plate once to make it a one-run game. In the top of the third, with S. Demers on second and Andrew Hartman on first, Dunkle stepped into the box and singled to center field to bring home Demers to extend their lead to 3-1. The Falcons answered right back in the bottom half of the third with a run to make it a one-run game once again.
  • In the sixth inning, Gordon tacked on another run to double up the Falcons, 4-2, but the two run cushion was short lived as Fitchburg answered right back to bring the score to 4-3 in favor of Gordon.
  • With the bases loaded and two down in the bottom of the seventh, Fitchburg tied it up after Connor Morehouse was hit by a pitch, sending the game into extras. After a scoreless eighth inning, S. Demers hit a bomb over the left field fence to take the 5-4 edge heading into the bottom of the ninth. Then, with runners on the corners with two outs, Andrew Marzetta forced a pop up from Morehouse to earn the save and preserve the 5-4 victory.
  • Right-hander Daniel Ensign went four innings, retiring seven straight, and only allowing a pair of hits.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Andrew Marzetta recorded his first collegiate save.
  • Gordon returns to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Elms College at 10 a.m.
