Scots Drop Two To Golden Bears

Gordon College Baseball traveled to Springfield, Massachusetts this afternoon to square up against the Western New England (WNE) Golden Bears for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup where the Fighting Scots fell to their hosts, 3-8 and 4-14.

Game One
  • WNE attempted to get on the board first as they found themselves with bases loaded in the bottom of the first before Hunter Routhier sat the final batter down to hold the score at 0-0. In their next ups, CJ Demers got things going for the Scots as the freshman smacked a double to right field before Gabe Coyne-Martinez moved him to third after singling to the right side, however, the Fighting Scots were unable to cross the plate. The Golden Bears drew first blood as they capitalized on balk to give them a runner in scoring position before Vincent Caccavale registered a base hit up the middle to take the 1-0 edge heading into the third.
  • The hosts added two runs to their lead in both the third and sixth inning before the Scots made it a two-run ball game in the seventh thanks to a mixture of hits from Andrew Hartman and C. Demers along with two Golden Bear miscues (3-5). However, WNE immediately answered back with two runs before tacking on another in the eighth to seal the 8-3 win.
Game Two
  • The Fighting Scots were able to score first thanks to a single off the hot bat of Hartman to give Gordon an early 1-0 advantage. After only allowing one Golden Bear on base, the Scots stayed hot in the batter's box as Dalton Cody and Robert Dunkle started off the second with back to back singles to the left side. The next batter up, Jalen Coyne-Martinez was able to score Cody after each Scot advanced safely on a fielder's choice (2-0).
  • WNE got their bats going shortly after as they tied it up at two-all thanks to a double from sophomore Golden Bear Kohtara Shimada before taking the lead 4-2. However, the Fighting Scots evened it out again when Dunkle ropped a triple to center to bring home Cody and G. Coyne-Martinez (4-4). But the Golden Bears kept their hitting parade alive as they added another two runs to their tally to go up 6-4 heading into the fourth. The Scots attempted to shrink the gap, collecting four more hits in the remaining innings, however, WNE's bats could not be tamed as they were able to more than double their score after an eighth inning eruption to end the game early and secure the overall sweep, 14-4.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Between the two games, Robert Dunkle was one home run shy of hitting the cycle after registering a double in game one and a single and triple in game two.
  • The Fighting Scots return to their home field on Tuesday, April 12 when they host CCC rivals Endicott College for a single nine-inning battle at 3 p.m.
