Big Sixth Inning Lifts Bears Past Scots In Non-League Action

Gordon College Baseball traveled to Bridgewater, Massachusetts to square off against the Bridgewater State Bears in non-conference action this afternoon. Despite taking the early lead, a late rally from the home team put the Bears over the edge to secure the 11-8 win over the Scots.

How It Happened
  • The Fighting Scots drew first blood as Patrick Tevenan singled to right field, scoring teammate Jonathan McIntyre (1-0) in the top of the first.
  • An inning later, the home team put themselves on top as the Bears used three hits to plate two runs to double up the Scots, 2-1 before adding another in the bottom of the third to lead 3-1.
  • With one down, Ben Chase laced a triple to right center field and the next batter up, Josh Popovitch executed a perfect suicide squeeze to score Chase for the Scots' second tally of the day. McIntyre followed that up with a single of his own to advance Popovitch into scoring position. After the Bears collected the second out of the frame, Robert Dunkle and Tevenan each recorded an RBI single to give Gordon the 4-3 edge.
  • It remained 4-3 until Bridgewater put pressure on the Scots' defense to cross the plate five times in the sixth and go on top, 8-4.
  • Not rattled, Gordon came back and tied it up in the visitor half of the seventh in large part due to a three-RBI double to left field off the bat of Popovitch to make it a one-run ball game. Popovitch would later score after Dalton Cody reached on an error to extend the inning to lock it up at 8-8.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, the home team was able to score three times to gain a comfortable 11-8 lead they would not relinquish, coming away with the three-run win over the Scots.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Robert Dunkle tied his career-high in hits with four.
  • Josh Popovitch knocked in a career-high four RBI.
  • Five Scots had two or more hits in today's game.
  • Gordon returns to action on Tuesday April 19 in a neutral site game against Anna Maria at in Northborough, Mass.
