Cody, Routhier Spark Scots' Momentum In CCC Sweep Over Leopards

Gordon College Baseball traveled to Boston this morning to square up against the Wentworth Leopards for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) battle where the Fighting Scots earned their first conference victories of the season (9-1 in game one, 2-1 in game two).

Game One
  • With the bases juiced and two outs, sophomore Dalton Cody caught hold of one from Leopards' right-hander Brandon Sullivan, sending it over the right field fence for his first collegiate grand slam to give the Scots a comfortable 4-0 lead in the first.
  • Hunter Routhier retired the next 10 Wentworth batters before the home team was finally able to put the bat on the ball for a pair of singles in the home half of the fourth. However, Routheir sat down Christian Peruzzi on four pitches before a fly out to keep the Leopards off the board.
  • During Routhier's dominating performance, Gordon continued to pile up the runs. The Scots added one in the third with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andrew Hartman to make it 5-0 before a four-run fourth where Shane Demers, Patrick Tevenan, CJ Demers, as well as Hartman each booked an RBI in the inning to widen the gap to nine runs (9-0).
  • Wentworth's Peruzzi knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to left to put his squad on the board, but it was not enough as the Scots earned the eight-run victory.
Game Two
  • Despite a flurry of scattered hits to open up the second game, Gordon was patient and in the visitor half of the sixth, Gabe Coyne-Martinez opened up the inning with a two-bagger to left field to quickly put him in scoring position. Teammate John McIntyre moved him to third with a groundout to second with one out. Then, junior S. Demers belted a double to center field, knocking in G. Coyne-Martinez for the first score of the game. Not content with one run, Tevenan ripped a single to left that allowed S. Demers to come home and make the score 2-0 in favor of Gordon.
  • Rookie Jacob Hitchcock took the reigns from starting pitcher Andrew Marzetta with two on in the bottom of the sixth. Wentworth's Peruzzi once again had a positive at bat as the sophomore knocked in his teammate to split the deficit in half (2-1) in the sixth.
  • From there, Hitchcock sat the Leopards down in order in the seventh and allowed only one hit in the following two innings to secure the save in the Scots' 2-1 win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Hunter Routhier struck out a career-high 10 Leopards in game one.
  • Also in game one, Dalton Cody not only recorded his first collegiate grand slam but also home run.
  • Andrew Marzetta pitched his way to his first victory of the season while Jacob Hitchcock booked his first collegiate career save.
