Late Eight-Run Rally Over Hawks Sends Scots To Playoffs

Gordon College Baseball hit their home diamond this afternoon for their final regular season conference doubleheader against the Hawks of Roger Williams (RWU) where the Fighting Scots first fell to their guests, 3-7 in game one before an eight-run parade in the bottom of the eighth to come back and lock in the second game victory, 15-13.

Game One
  • The Scots were able to shut out the Hawks in the first, however RWU still managed to get on the board early in the top of the second after stringing two hits together to gain a narrow 1-0 edge. In the home half of the third, Jonathan McIntyre got the Fighting Scots rolling with a single up the middle to put teammate Jalen Coyne-Martinez in scoring position. With two outs to go, Patrick Tevenan stirred up the Hawks' defense after reaching on a fielder's choice before a muffed throw from the third baseman brought J. Coyne-Martinez around to score and knot it up, 1-1.
  • In the fourth, both squads were able to get a runner on but it wasn't until the fifth when the Hawks surpassed the tie with a two RBI single to go ahead, 3-1. The Scots attempted to retaliate before RWU tacked on another run in the sixth to secure the three-run lead. With bases loaded and one down, rookie Jacob Hitchcock stepped onto the rubber in relief to shut down the Hawks' next two batters to freeze the score, 4-1.
  • J. Coyne-Martinez catalyzed the Scots' first eighth inning rally thanks to a lead off double down the left field line before Gordon forced back to back walks to make it a one-run game (3-4). However, the Hawks broke open in their last at bats thanks to a two-run shot followed up by an RBI single to seal the eventual 7-3 win over the Scots.
Game Two
  • The Hawks took advantage of their first ups, taking the early 1-0 edge once again. However, this time the Scots immediately answered back with four runs off of five hits as McIntrye, Shane Demers and Dalton Cody smacked a double each in a row broken up by a Robert Dunkle single up the middle to grab the 4-1 lead heading into the second. RWU was able to shrink their deficit to two (2-4) in the next inning before regaining the one-run advantage in the fourth thanks to a four-hit inning (5-4).
  • After the Hawks tacked on another three runs, the Scots came back with three runs of their own after S. Demers capitalized on a wild pitch to cross the plate moments before his brother CJ Demers single through the left side to drive home two teammates to hold onto the one-run gap, 7-8.
  • The Fighting Scots denied RWU in the sixth, however, the Hawks went on their biggest spree of the afternoon in the seventh as they were able to cross the plate four times to bring the score to 12-7. The Hawks added one more run to their lead before the Scots exploded with a late eight-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to take the narrow edge, 15-13.
  • With three outs to go the Fighting Scots got down to business, turning a heart-pounding double play after a line out to second before McIntrye threw out the last Hawk with a spectacular play up the middle to seal the playoff clenching victory.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Shane Demers has hit safely in each of the Scots' past eight games.
  • After today's comeback win, the Fighting Scots earned the seventh spot in the conference to punch their ticket to playoffs, set to face the No. 6 seeded Suffolk Rams in Boston on Monday, May 9 at 3 p.m.
