Traveling to West Hartford, Connecticut this afternoon, Gordon College Field Hockey opened up their 2022 season with a bang as the Fighting Scots came back from a first quarter deficit to grab their first win of the year against the University of Saint Joseph's (USJ) Blue Jays, 2-1. After the Blue Jays grabbed an early but slim edge in the first, Senior
Anna Rathbun tied it up in the second before scoring a last minute goal in the final frame to capture the win for her squad.
How It Happened
- USJ came out firing, taking two shots in the first 1:03 minutes of action before finally finding the back of the cage at the 1:12 mark, securing an early 1-0 advantage.
- After keeping the Blue Jays at bay for the remainder of the quarter, Rathbun capitalized on a feed from Sam Dalexis to knot it up at one with 3:22 remaining before the break.
- In the third, the Fighting Scots outshot their opponents, 4-3 but neither team was able to break the tie.
- It wasn't until the final 15, with 31 ticks left in regulation when Rathbun used her hot stick to knock in a stealthy pass from Maddie Ahern, locking in the 2-1 comeback win for the Scots.
Beyond The Box Score
- Maddie Ahern earned her first career assist on this afternoon's game-winner.
- Sam Dalexis also booked her first assist as a Scot.
- The Fighting Scots continue non-conference action this Saturday, September 3 when they travel to Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania to face the Lions of Bryn Athyn College at 1 p.m.
