Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Scots Drop Two In Final Day Of Gordon Invitational

On the second day of the Gordon Invitational, Gordon College Volleyball first played the OglethorpeĀ Stormy Petrels where the Fighting Scots fell 3-0 after battling through a 30-point first set before being edged out in the nightcap against theĀ Lasell University (LU)Ā Pride, 3-0.

Game One
  • The Scots earned their first lead of the day after a powerful kill from senior Valerie NilanĀ which was followed up by an ace fromĀ Kaitlin Mercado (3-2). However, not long after, the Petrels began to pull ahead until Annie Murphy smoked a pair of kills to knot it up 15-all. The squads went point for point en route to the match-point with Oglethorpe having theĀ advantage (25-24) but a Gordon timeout brought the score back in the Scots' favor (26-25) before the Petrels battled back toĀ secure the gritty first set win, 30-28.Ā
  • Murphy got the Fighting Scots going once again in the second set, grabbingĀ a two-point lead (5-3) before Oglethorpe went ahead 7-6 and never looked back, taking the nextĀ set 25-16.Ā
  • Gordon came out hot in the third, earningĀ three straight points before the Petrels could get on the board. After an Oglethorpe surge, the Scots battled for control as NilanĀ smashed down a trio of kills to regain the edge (7-6). However, Oglethorpe went on a 10-point run broken up by one Scot point (21-10). Despite the Fighting Scots' best efforts, the Petrels sealed the shutoutĀ win with a 25-13 final set victory.Ā
Game Two
  • After jumping to a quick 4-1 lead, the Scots held command until Lasell was able to tie it up at 10. The Pride went onĀ to book eight straight points before a mix of kills from Murphy and Emily SchneiderĀ shut down their spree toĀ closeĀ the gap 19-14. But the Scots were unable to keep their momentum,Ā dropping the first set,Ā 25-15.Ā
  • In the second set,Ā LasellĀ stayed in control until the Fighting Scots capitalized on their opponent's miscues on top of a Maggie RejmerĀ killĀ to come within oneĀ (17-18) before LU broke the pattern with a seven-point run to go on top 2-0 (25-17).Ā
  • The Fighting Scots fought hard for a fourth set, keeping the score within two beforeĀ grabbing the lead at 13-12. HoweverĀ shortly after, the Pride regained their edge, 19-14 until Jordan ShadukĀ brought the score to 19-20Ā with back to back kills before NilanĀ gave the Scots the go-ahead point with a stealthy ace (21-20). Lasell's McKenna McCoolĀ brought her squad to match-point (24-22) but the Scots didn't go down without a fight, recording two straight points to tie it up at 24 thanks to a towering kill from Joey Keltner.Ā However, it wasn't enough as the Pride pushed on to take the final frameĀ 26-24 and lock inĀ the overall 3-0 win.Ā
