Scots Split With Colonels In First CCC Twin Bill Of The Season

Gordon College Baseball traveled to Milton, Massachusetts to square up against the Curry College Colonels for their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) nine-inning twin bill where the Fighting Scots started off the day with a dominant, 11-1 win after scorching the ball in the batters box before falling to their hosts, 5-9 in the nightcap.

Game One
  • Both squads had a quick first inning in the field before Gordon blew it open in their second at bats as CJ Demers catalyzed a hitting spree for the Scots topped off by a Gianni Mercurio homer over the right field fence, resulting in an early 4-0 lead. Starting pitcher Andrew Marzetta took the field and shut down the Colonels in the home half of the second before the Fighting Scots went on to tack on two more runs after stringing together three hits in their next ups (6-0).
  • The Colonels were able to get one on the board but the Scots immediately got the run back to make it 7-1. Marzetta held Curry to just four hits in the next four innings before Gordon exploded in the top of the eighth to take a dominant 11-1 lead, sealed by a Dalton Cody three-run shot over the right field fence. Curry attempted to use their home field advantage but Marzetta sat all three batters down in a row while striking out two to lock in the Scots' first CCC win of the season.
Game Two
  • This time, the Fighting Scots wasted no time getting on the board as they took advantage of their first ups, scoring first thanks to a moon-shot homerun from Andrew Hartman to take an early 2-0 edge. However, the Colonels made sure to shrink the deficit to one in the home half of the first before knotting it up 2-2 in the third after a double brought home the tying run.
  • The score was at a standstill until the fifth frame when Robert Dunkle rocketed a double to right field, bringing two teammates home to regain the two-run advantage (4-2). But the Scots' lead didn't hold for long as Curry soon evened out the score (4-4) in the fifth before busting out their bats to go-ahead, 8-4 after stringing a few hits together.
  • The Colonels were able to tack on another run thanks to a homer in the sixth (9-4). The Fighting Scots fought to close the gap in their final at bats as Mercurio sacrifice flied out to center to send C. Demers home (5-9) while holding their hosts scoreless in the field, however, it wasn't enough as the Scots took the eventual 5-9 loss.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Andrew Marzetta earned a career-high 11 strikeouts in nine-innings of play.
  • The Fighting Scots continue CCC action this week when they venture to Endicott College for a nine-inning North Shore bout at 3:30 p.m.
