Scots Catch Fire With 22-7 Win Over Raiders

The long awaited Gordon College Baseball home-opener happened this afternoon on a windy J. Tec White Field where the Fighting Scots welcomed the Rivier Raiders in non-conference action. After stringing together 16 hits, the Fighting Scots ended it early as the blue and white defeated the Raiders, 22-7 in seven innings.

How It Happened
  • Rivier got ahead early, scoring three in the top of the first thanks to a 3-RBI homer. However, the Fighting Scots got those three runs back and then some in the home half of the inning. After a flurry of free bases and a pair of singles, the Scots locked it up at 3-3 with Hunter Simpson at bat. The rookie did not disappoint, lacing a double down the left field line to double up the Raiders, 6-3.
  • The visitors were able to plate one run in the visitor half of the third, but once again Simpson made some noise, belting a two-run homer to left field to widen the gap to four runs (8-4).
  • Gordon broke it open in the home half of the fourth, scoring 10 runs on seven hits, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Shane Demers to lead 18-4 after four innings. The Scots added four more in their next at bats before Rivier was able to put three more on the board in the top of the seventh. In the end, the home team took care of business to secure the 22-7 victory in their home-opener.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Freshman Hunter Simpson had a career-high three hits and five RBIs. Additionally, Simpson's homer today was his first as a Scot.
  • David Melendez also had a career day, with three hits, three RBIs, and four runs scored.
  • Next up for the Scots is a weekend doubleheader vs. the Thomas College Terriers on Saturday, April 1 with first pitch at 1 p.m.
