Scots Split With Hawks In Saturday Conference Twin-Bill

Gordon College Baseball traveled to Bristol, Rhode Island this afternoon for a double-header against the Roger Williams University Hawks where the Fighting Scots started the day off with a 6-4 victory before falling in the nightcap, 5-11.

Game One
  • The Hawks got going early on in the first, taking the initial 2-0 edge off of two hits. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Andrew Marzetta kept Roger to just one base runner each inning until the hosts were able to bring another Hawk across the plate after a squeeze bunt single to make it 3-0 heading into the seventh.
  • Gordon's David Melendez attempted to start a rally for the Scots, leading his squad off with a single up the middle which was followed by a base hit down the right field line from Ben Chase to put runners on first and third, however, the Hawks were able to get out of the inning as the next batter up grounded into a double play.
  • It wasn't until the eighth when the Scots got hot at the plate, scoring four runs of off three hits topped off by a two RBI single from Shane Demers to give Gordon their first tallies of the day (2-3). Next, Dalton Cody forced a walk with bases loaded to bring in another run for the Scots to knot it up 3-3 before Melendez sacrifice flied out to center, scoring S. Demers to give the Fighting Scots the 4-3 advantage.
  • In the next inning, the Scots used their final at bats to extend their lead, 6-3 thanks to a trio of base hits strung together. The Hawks attempted a late comeback as they were able to score one run, but the Scots immediately shut them down to seal the 6-4 CCC win.
Game Two
  • This time, the Scots wasted no time getting on the board as they were the first to score in their first ups thanks to the hot bat of S. Demers who scored CJ Demers off of a single to center. However, Roger answered back in the home half of the first with two runs of their own to take the 2-1 edge. The squads were at a standstill until the fifth when the Hawks extended their lead to 6-1 after an RBI single and a three-run hawk homer.
  • In the sixth, Hunter Simpson brought the Scots one run closer as the rookie with an RBI single to left (2-6). After holding the Hawks scoreless, the Scots kept their bats alive in the seventh, tacking on another run to come within three (3-6). But Roger got back that run and more as the home team launched a two run homer to lengthen the gap, 8-3 before making it 9-3 heading into the eighth where the Hawks brought the score to 11-3. In the Scots' last ups, Gianni Mercurio kept his squad in the game as the rookie brought in two runs with a fielder's choice to second, however, Gordon was unable to shrink the gap as they took the eventual 11-5 loss.
Beyond The Box Score
  • With the split, the Fighting Scots ended their regular season with the No. 7 seed in the upcoming CCC tournament which begins on Monday, May 8 where the Scots will head to Boston to battle No. 6 Suffolk.
