Electric Scots Sink Mariners In TriMatch Split

Gordon College Volleyball welcomed the Wellesley College Blue and the Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) Mariners today to Kanas Court for a trimatch. In an almost two hour long match against Wellesley to open up the day with a 3 - 1 loss before coming back to defeat the Mariners in an exciting 3 - 2 victory to cap off the day for the Scots. 

Gordon vs. Wellesley
  • The Fighting Scots and Blue knotted the scoreboard up seven different times before the tenth point of the frame where the Blue attempted to pull away. However, the Scots came back to lock it up at 17 - 17 and 18 - 18, but the visitors regained momentum to win 25 - 18.
  • Similar to the first set, both sides traded points with Wellesley having the slight advantage before they had a trio of attack errors giving Gordon the 16 -15 edge. From there, Annie Zimmerman was rock solid behind the service line leading a four point run to swing the pendulum to the Scots (21 - 16). A pair of aces from Teagan Brideweser, capped off by a monstrous kill from Joey Keltner ended the second with a 25 - 20 Scot victory to even the tally out at 1 - 1.
  • In yet another evenly matched set, the battle of the blue and white continued with each side fighting to get the lead and stay there. Seven ties was the name of the game once again before Wellesley widened the gap late in the third frame to secure the 25 - 21 win and 2 - 1 lead.
  • Wellesley and Gordon registered eleven even tallies in the fourth, before a pair of service aces by the visitors and kills lifted the Blue over the Fighting Scots, 25 - 19 and overall 3 - 1 win. 
Gordon vs. Maine Maritime
  • Holding a 14 - 8 advantage in the opening set, Gordon College eventually widened the gap to 20 - 10. However, the Mariners began to claw their way back but it wasn't enough as the blue and white secured the 25 - 21 victory.
  • The Mariners raced out to a quick 2 - 0 before each side traded leads until the scoreboard read 22 - 22. From there, the Mariners closed it out to come out with the 25 - 23 win to even out the score at 1 - 1.
  • Gordon took advantage of a pair of Mariner attack errors to kick off the third before three lead changes shifted momentum to MMA as they led 17 - 12. However, the Fighting Scots did not go away easy, climbing back, point by point to lock it up at 21 - 21 before finishing off the set 25 - 21 to hold the 2 - 1 advantage.
  • In the fourth, MMA took the lead early and didn't look back en route to the 25-16 win to once again even it out at 2 - 2.
  • With the score at 7 - 7 in the fifth and deciding set, Gordon, backed by Kate Howe doubled up the Mariners 14 - 7 before using a MMA service error to secure the 3 - 2 win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Nikki Batson surpassed 500 kills this morning.
  • Joey Keltner registered her fourth match with a double-double in kills and digs against Wellesley.
  • Annie Murphy reached a new career-high in kills with 19 against MMA.
  • The Fighting Scots host Bridgewater State on Wednesday, September 20 at 7 p.m.
