Game Recap: Baseball |

Late Rally Falls Short For Scots Against Golden Bears

Gordon College Baseball hit the road today for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader against their hosts Western New England (WNE). The home team blanked the Fighting Scots in game one, 10-0, but the Scots fought back in game two as the Golden Bears narrowly defeated them by a score of 9-8.

Game One
  • WNE scored on a wild pitch in the home half of the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead.
  • Gordon rookie Riley Stys quieted the Golden Bears in the next two innings before WNE crossed the plate four times in the fourth (5-0) and added two more in the fifth (7-0).
  • The home team continued to chip away in the final innings to claim the 10-0 win in eight innings.
Game Two
  • Both CJ Demers and Andrew Hartman crossed the plate in the top of the first to lead the Golden Bears, 2-0. Staying hot offensively, WNE took the lead after scoring three runs in the home half of the inning.
  • WNE stretched their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third, but Hartman laced a double down the right field line to make it a one-run ball game (5-4).
  • The Golden Bears, however, scored twice in the sixth and the eight, to hold the 9-4 advantage going into the ninth.
  • A Jonathan McIntyre double ignited a hot start for the blue and white in their final at bat. The junior came around to score thanks to a Gianni Mercurio single up the middle. Mercurio passed off the hot bat to David Melendez, who connected with the third straight hit to put runners on first and second. Demers came up to the plate and hit one back up the middle bringing the score to 9-6. Then, Robert Dunkle and Alex Razzaboni both singled to right field making it a one-run game, but the home team was able to get the final out of the game and escaped the comeback.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Rookie right-handed pitcher Riley Stys recorded a career-high eight strikeouts in game one.
  • Gianni Mercurio booked his first multi-hit game of the season in game two.
  • David Melendez registered his second multi-hit game in CCC action.
  • Andrew Hartman is on a six-game hit streak.
  • The Fighting Scots return to action on Tuesday, April 23 as they travel to crosstown rival Endicott College for a nine-inning game at 3:30 p.m.
