Mincone, Piorkowski Nearly Push Scots Past Colonels

Gordon College Women's Lacrosse went to Milton, Massachusetts for a tight contest against the Colonels of Curry College on Saturday afternoon, where the home team took the small margin win, 19-16.

For the Fighting Scots, Caroline Piorkowski led the way with five goals, while Rachel Mincone tacked on four goals and picked up five ground balls. Meanwhile, Kaitlyn Mini, Abbie Zorrilla, and Brooke Roberti all scored a pair of goals, while Emma Darling caused four turnovers and grabbed two ground balls.

Curry was paced by Natalie Keenan who notched five goals and one assist, as teammates Chloe Chevrier and Grayson Goolgasian both netted four goals.

How It Happened
  • Opening up the game, Mincone found the back of the net first, as the blue and white went up 1-0. The Colonels answered back with two goals of their own, before Mincone scored again to even out the game 2-2. Still in the first frame, the home team doubled up the Scots 4-2, but Piorkowski closed out the frame by tacking on one goal (4-3).
  • Gordon's Roberti scored the first goal in the second period, bringing the score to 4-all. However, Curry attempted to pull away again by scoring three goals, but Gordon kept fighting back as the blue and white scored two more goals (7-6). Curry again tried to put the game out of reach scoring a trio of goals, but before the half was over, Piorkowski kept the game within a three-goal reach, 10-7.
  • Coming out of the half, Becca Rhoda and the Scots tacked on three goals (10-10), before Curry put two goals up of their own (12-10). A quick shot by Piorkowski cut the deficit to one, but the home team regained a slight multi-goal edge down the stretch to hold the 18-13 advantage with just under seven minutes to go in regulation. Gordon rattled in three unanswered tallies in the closing minutes (18-16), but the Colonels were able to hold on for the win.
