Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Scots Pick Up First Victory Of The Season In Day Two Split

On day two of the Gordon College Invitational, the Fighting Scots Volleyball team squared off against the Neumann Knights and the MIT Engineers. In the morning game, Gordon defeated the Knights 3-1 and later fell to the Engineers, 0-3.

Gordon vs. Neumann
Joey Keltner slammed down 17 kills as well as registering 11 digs, Annie Murphy chipped in 14 kills, Wren Worth booked 13 digs, while Annika Schmitt dished out 23 assists.
  • Neumann gave Gordon the first tally of the day after a service error, but both sides traded leads in a highly competitive contest. With the ninth lead change of the opening frame, Gordon went on a 5-0 run to widen the gap and separated themselves to snatch the 25-20 win.
  • Locked up at 11-all, the Knights began to slip away slightly, remaining out of reach en route to the 25-18 win to even the sets out at one each.
  • The Knights raced out to a 7-0 advantage in the third, but Gordon buckled down and began to claw their way back into contention after a Murphy kill (14-11), followed by stellar control from Aba Asanta behind the service line to put Gordon out in front, 16-14. Down the stretch the scoreboard was knotted up five more times, but the blue and white had the upper hand to claim the 25-23 win and go up two games to one.
  • A 9-0 scoring streak from the home team was all the Scots needed to close it out to dominate the fourth frame, 25-16.
Gordon vs. MIT
Murphy connected for nine kills, Annie Zimmerman added seven, while Haley Hutzler had five kills.
  • Leading 10-5 in the first set, MIT continued to pull away down the stretch to take a 25-9 victory (1-0).
  • MIT kicked the second frame off with a comfortable cushion, but Gordon got in rhythm to knot it up at 16-16. It remained neck and neck, but the Engineers escaped, 25-20.
  • Gordon battled within three points before trailing by just one (16-15), forcing MIT to call a timeout to regroup from the surging Scots. The blue and white tied it up at 17-17 to put the Engineers on their heels, but the visitors chipped away to complete the sweep.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Joey Keltner and Annie Murphy led the way once again with double digit kills in game one.
  • In game two, Abi Elder recorded a career-high eight digs in just her third collegiate game.
  • Also in the second game, Annie Zimmerman had her most kills on the young season with seven.
  • Gordon returns to the court on Wednesday, September 4 as they travel up to Henniker, N.H. to play the Pilgrims of New England College at 6 p.m.
