Scots Secure Sunday Split With Win Over Keene State

Gordon College Volleyball hosted Wheaton College and Keene State today in a tri-match on Kanas Court. Wheaton defeated the Fighting Scots, 3-1 before the blue and white won a five set thriller over Keene, 3-2.

Gordon vs. Wheaton
  • Despite Wheaton taking a comfortable early lead, Gordon's Joey Keltner slammed down a kill to make it a one point game (12-11). Wheaton answered back with four straight points to widen the gap to eventually come away with the 25-19 win.
  • The visitors once again started off hot as the scoreboard read 9-3, but Gordon continued to battle. However, just as the Fighting Scots were in reach, the Lyons pulled away to secure the 25–17 win.
  • Gordon knotted up the score at 10-10 and continued to hold a slight edge down the stretch. Wheaton brought the score to 20-19, but Gordon recorded four straight points to defeat the Lyons, 25-20.
  • In the fourth set, Wheaton was able to rally late to score eight unanswered points to flip the script and win the final frame by a score of 28-26.
Gordon vs. Keene State
  • A 5-0 run midway through the first ignited the home team to overtake the Owls of Keene State eventually doubling up the visitors (20-10) before earning the 25-11 victory.
  • The second frame was up for the taking as both teams traded points and knotted up the scoreboard five times within the first 10 points for either side. Gordon pulled away by a few points but the Owls came right back at 18, 19, and 20-all before evening out the score with 25-21 win.
  • In another evenly matched contest, the Scots and Owls went kill for kill until the home team closed it out (25-22).
  • Looking to take it to a fifth set, Keene did just that widening the gap late, 25-14.
  • Keene stormed out to a 5-1 advantage, but once again the Scots created a storm of their own to tie it up at 5-5. The Owls went ahead, 13-10 but a pair of kills from Annie Murphy, followed by an ace from Aba Asante, Gordon came out on top, 15-13.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Junior transfer Maria Clarabuch recorded eight kills which sets a career-high as a Fighting Scots in game one.
  • Rookie Haley Hutzler had a career-high 12 kills against Keene State.
  • Olivia Fleming dished out a career-high 20 assists against Keene State. Transfer Annika Schmitt also had a career-high with 27 assists.
  • Annie Murphy slammed down a season-high 17 kills as well as tying her career-high of seven block assists.
  • Next up for Gordon in conference play on Saturday, September 28 as they host Nichols at 1 p.m. on Kanas Court.
