Gordon College Men's Lacrosse opened their season in Providence R.I. against future Conference of New England (CNE) member Johnson and Wales Univeristy on Wednesday night. The Fighting Scots looked strong out of the gate but the Wildcats capitalized on home field advantage to win 12-10 over the Scots.
Marco Fernandez scored three goals and record one assist for the Fighting Scots, while
Jackson Wright and
Ryan Arthur both notched two goals and an assist each.
For the Wildcats,
Jack Davis scored four goals, then
Donny McInnis, Trevor Reid, and
Jacob Tresser all scored two goals each.
How It Happened
- Fighting Scots' Arthur found the back of the net first just over five minutes into game to take a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats responded with two goals of their own to go up 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.
- The Wildcats threatened to pull away as they scored again (3-1). However, Wright ripped the ball past the goalie twice within a three minute span to level the score 3-3. Then Arthur found his second goal of the day to put the Scots back on the top 4-3. Fernandez joined in on the fun as he fired a beamer into the goal to expand the lead to 5-3 right before the half.
- The Scots and Wildcats traded goals throughout the third quarter. Eventually the Wildcats brought a 9-7 lead into the final quarter.
- The Wildcats scored two more goals to take a commanding 11-7 lead over the Scots. But the Scots rallied behind Fernandez, Ryan Long, and Aidan Walsh as they all scored a goal two minutes apart halfway through the fourth quarter. However, the Wildcats survived the Scots comeback to win 12-10.
