Scots Pick Up First Victory Of The Season Over Berea, 13-10

On a windy sunny day, Gordon College Baseball hit the dirt to play the Berea College Mountaineers at the RussMatt Tournament. In a high-scoring game, the Fighting Scots came out on top, 13-10.

How It Happened
  • Back-to-back walks with the bases loaded, the Fighting Scots quickly took the 2-0 lead. Evan Clark belted a ground rule double to score two more Scots and bring the score to 4-0. Berea answered back in the home half of the first to cut the deficit in half (4-2) before tacking on another in the second (4-3).
  • After a lead-off double from Robert Dunkle in the top of the third, the senior came around to score after a wild pitch to regain a two-run cushion (5-3).
  • Berea strung together a trio of singles to orchestrate two runs in the third to lock up the score at 5-5. The Mountaineers put the ball in play often in the fourth, causing a handful of Gordon miscues to take the lead, 8-5.
  • Gordon put up a four-spot on the board in the top of the sixth to regain the edge (9-8) while Michael Pelletier kept the opponents' bats quiet.
  • Once again leading off the frame with a hit, Dunkle hit a single to center field in the top of the eighth and quickly ran around the bases to score thanks to a Clark triple to left center. Then, Ben Marciano laid down a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to plate Clark to widen the gap to 11-8.
  • A two-out rally from the blue and white scored a pair in the ninth to secure the eventual 13-10 win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • First year Head Coach Shane Demers booked his first win at the helm.
  • Rookies Ben Marciano and Gabe Falls each recorded their first collegiate hits today.
  • Pitcher Michael Pelletier fanned a career-high five batters in his 5.1 innings of work today for the win.
  • Robert Dunkle and Evan Clark matched offensive outputs with three-hits and four runs scored. Their four runs marks a career-high.
  • The Scots return to the diamond tomorrow, March 7 for a twin bill against the Elms College Blazers for day two of the RussMatt Tournament.
